The individuals I support in living independently find the step-by-step checklist for ingredients, the lists of utensils required to prepare the meal, and the visual step-by-step instructions are very helpful tools in preparing a recipe successfully with confidence. I have issues with my motor skills, timing of cooking, interoception – and I follow a restricted diet, due to a myriad of sensory issues. Again, the recipe made loads, so whilst it’s a longer cook than many of the recipes, your labour is rewarded with lots of yummy leftovers. A conversation about this needs to start, desperately, especially given we now grapple at the coalface with the cost of living crisis. I opted to try dishes on the complex end of what the book had to offer and implement some of the “expanding your repertoire” suggestions at the end of the recipe.

Hypersensitivity to sound can become unbearable in a kitchen, along with smells – and that is before you actually start cooking or the consumption! It is a wonderful teaching tool and resource for preparing healthy, delicious recipes for individuals of all abilities! We will keep rules that define things such as safety, as well as keeping standards of food care in place, too. That was important to me to insist upon, too, given often lacking representation; it was time for the Autistic individuals to speak for themselves, and to be facilitated in that manner. With contributions from individuals within the autistic community and options for quick meals, special occasions and more. All played a part in making the kitchen a place where many were extremely uncomfortable and/or anxious/apprehensive at times. Pre-preparation: Take the butter out of your fridge and allow to come to room temperature; this will make it easier to work with in the long run. Seems like it might be interesting but I’m worried it might end up gimmicky, looking for input/experience whether it’s worth the purchase. I identified with several of the things Lydia mentions, gifting me language to describe something I’ve struggled with all my life but never been able to explain before.

In the end, I had to go all the way to a tribunal, which rounded off an extraordinarily stressful 16 months. They contain adaptations and options to suit different dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free, and additional modifications for those who are sensory seekers, sensory avoiders or who want to expand their repertoire in the kitchen. It was important to me to put autistic and disabled voices front and centre; there is a tiny number of non-disabled people who have made this book happen, probably less than ten. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Today, and it’s been already months, we are in difficult circumstances where it seems like driving the car without properly functioning brakes. The cake everyone is asking me about and here at my home everyone is waiting for and making plans for the next baking session due to any (I mean ANY! By the proxy of the gender that I present as, it’s almost like having to go across some kind of invisible barrier on the pathway to diagnosis. I have a degree of privilege in that I am able to speak and engage with people; this is so often reflected by the surprise people express when they find out I am autistic. I had always found this activity immensely difficult, but no one had ever suggested that being autistic may have had any kind of connection.

These recipes make 'the obvious' obvious, and provide adaptations to suit different executive functioning levels, sensory preferences and dietary needs. My job [as a journalist] relies on asking questions, which is not just in the context of an interview. Steve Silberman, author, NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity A delightful guide full of important information for neurodivergent foodies - we've needed this for years! Many autistic people spoke or wrote to me about how they did not learn how to cook or prepare food because lessons were not accessible. I should warn you before you start – this one is not usual, absolutely not super serious, and not even an educational post. However, apparently, I could ‘just learn’ such skills – which is also not possible, due to a spiky profile. Primarily aimed at autistic people, Lydia explains several key cooking concepts to aid in your cooking journey. While I understand why some may suggest they want to shield others from stigma, you cannot live life in a perpetual state of "what if". I pitched the idea but didn’t really expect it to be accepted – it was more a release of frustration in having to justify myself once again, in spending time and an emotional energy that is not endless.
