There are parts of this book that are hard to read for being awfully pretentious, sexist and immature. Burger, who has now been writing publicly on magic for some 18 years or thereabouts, have now taken hold on a new generation of magicians.

Brown frankly appears to attach little importance—but is in fact a theatrical question, and that the traditional effects and approaches of mentalism, by their very nature, have too long lived their meager lives out somewhere between the desert towns of Dullsville and Endoftheline. Paul McKenna is going to be busy then with over 250 current listings, looks like he's missed a few as there have been 700 sold in completed listings! As the author comments, "I have also grown suspicious of the value of brief tricks, whereby a selected card may be transposed to the box, or be found by spelling to it. to amaze the experts, drawing from hypnotic skills and breathtaking psychological artistry This is brand new mindreading without compromise;. I don't use any of the tricks themselves in Pure Effect (although he has some tidy pieces in there), but the way he talks about turning tricks into magic is spot on.The book is still LOADED with wonderful material on neuro linguistic programming and fascinating treatises on magic. This we will display to the world and the world will see its goodness, and in its goodness will appreciate its delightful evil. A 2nd volunteer is then asked to the stage and is requested to stand behind the person sat in the chair.

Brown is more given to a mentalist's approach—and yet he eschews that label and, from the work described in these pages, that label clearly falls somewhere between inadequate and inappropriate. Regarding Stephen Long's posting; I have just checked and both "Pure Effect" and "Absolute Magic" are both available from my local Public Libraray! Here are our closest matches for Pure Effect, Direct Mindreading and Magical Artistry by Derren Brown. I also own a second edition copy, it's hard cover and I also have never heard before about a spiral version of this book! In summary then, Pure Effect is a more entertaining read and it may way give you good ideas for creating your own effects whereas Absolute Magic is a bit more heavy going on the theory side but definitely worth a good few reads if you don't want to end up producing a c*** (not the best), cliched performance.I also remember he makes several (quite sexist) jokes about women, seemingly to stress that he is straight, throughout. Also, one should not discount the fact that Derren Brown thinks it's very funny to stir up trouble occasionally. His dismissal of ethical implications are a bit too cavalier for my tastes, although there is perhaps truth to his suggestion that as "the character of the per-former becomes more defined . The author's fundamental position is that conventional definitions of—and barriers between—magic and mentalism are in fact stodgy old constructs that exist only in the confines of the traditions of magic, and have no bearing on the actual potential of magical performance. With flamboyant wit, Derren explains the secrets and techniques that he uses to amaze the experts, drawing from hypnotic skills and breathtaking psychological artistry.

Chock full of information for any serious magician or mentalist and definitely worth it if you can get your hands on a copy.I was recently looking at this product and I had read many reviews and in many of the reviews it said for it to be any song you needed an assistant and if you were doing it solo you needed to force the song. Mercury Monarch — it was the only way we could be near a free wifi connection — this is some kind of book. Brown argues, use them if you need to or want to if it has anything to do with the effect you want your audience to feel. The real "rare" version of "Pure Effect" is the first spiral bound edition which I believe was only available after his lecture at the International Magic Convention, and possibly at one of Duncan Trillo's Mind Magic events. I could see a person like Michael not wanting his previously published magic effects republished because, to the extent the general public knew "he was once a magician" it might dilute the mentalist "branded" image he has created and it might have audience members think that everything "mental" it accomplishes is "merely" done with tricks.

Richardson's book, which has caused a fair amount of deserved excitement in professional circles of both conjurors and mentalists alike, raised some interesting implications in this direction, at least to more attentive readers; the book suggests that the author is not so much a mentalist as he is a doer of mysteries, be they feats of believable if extremely skilled mental dexterity, unusual conjuring prowess, or more traditional paranormal demonstrations. So, in a bid to combine fitness with frugality, I've rounded up 20 ways you can exercise and get fit without spending a penny, both outdoors and at home. The one trick that many will be talking about but few will use, entitled "Smoke"—in which a thought-of card (from a face-up deck that is ribbon spread upon a table) is quite mysteriously divined, then instantly vanishes from the deck, whereupon the cigarette the performer has been blithely (and actually) smoking shockingly transforms into the card itself—in many ways crystallizes the ideas at the core of this book. Absolute Magic is Derren's take on performance (and contains no effects), and Pure Effect is about effects. This is the second time I have posted a question here, and in both cases folks have been friendly, thorough, and accurate. This was after maybe ten years of performing, but was the first time I ever got a clear sensation of exactly how I would feel if I were to be approached by a magician. Tommy Wonder presents us with similar demands in his landmark Books of Wonder, and responds to his similarly self-imposed challenges with exquisite combinations of mechanics, manipulation, and psychology, achieving a kind of magic that is dearly conjuring, and yet effects that seem beyond "mere" conjuring.
