In a rural province of France, a mysterious creature is leaving a trail of mutilated corpses across the countryside, savagely killing scores of women and children. There are close to 10 hours worth of extras, including both commentaries, which is exhausting to get through but, surprisingly, not so repetitive to feel like overkill. While Christophe Gans may have not topped this effort, I’m happy to revisit this movie many times over.

The werewolf movie has seemingly gone the way of the shark movie in recent times, retelling similar stories over and over, and relying on cheap CGI for its effects, and for many the genre has never really gotten past the double-whammy of An American Werewolf in London and The Howling way back in 1981 as the bar against all others shall be measured. Gans, in his commentary included on this disc, admits he prefers the first half of the film to the second. These were multi-camera, multi-day shots, with the original production enduring the four seasons weather wise,” Bigueur explains. The film tends to lean towards the latter, but it’s done with such gumption and incredible style that you can’t help but get swept up. A stunning new restoration of the director's cut of the thrilling 2001 cult classic BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF by director Christophe Gans, starring Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, Jérémie Renier, Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. However, it’s in some of the extra flourishes, largely in the editing, that the style hasn’t held up perfectly. The film might not have been as perfect as I remembered but this release is still set to be one of the best to come out this year. All in all, The Brotherhood of the Wolfis the crazy thrill-ride that surprised audiences back in 2001 and even to this day.

And while you must remain respectful of the original creative intent, why not reimagine the image as it should have been had those tools and technologies existed then? Soon, the two men find themselves entangled in a web of strange myths and political intrigues where nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted. I enjoyed the film a lot back then but, for whatever reason, haven’t revisited it for a long time since those first couple of viewings. One, unimaginitively titled ‘Behind the Scenes’, is very much a fly-on-the-wall affair that charts the difficult production from start to finish. The film gains a much-needed new coat of paint with a stellar 4K restoration presented in 2160p with Dolby Vision HDR, Atmos audio, plus the supplements package is nothing to blink at.Featuring an often stunning Dolby Vision transfer, Atmos audio in French, corrected subtitles, and a nice assortment of vintage extras, it’s the release we always deserved.

Fronsac’s investigations lead him the local brothel, where hThrough this scene, right from the outset, the director sets his film apart from any standard period drama, French or otherwise, establishing itself with the kind of opening you would expect from a horror film (c. After a foreboding introductory sequence, set in the midst of the French Revolution, we flashback as the narrating character reflects on his fateful experiences from the preceding decades. The new Dolby Atmos track that was created for the 4K makeover of the film sounds very good, but I do not think that fans of the film will be surprised by it.
