There were so many urgent things that needed to be done, and just for a fleeting moment I thought of my grandfather David McKay who was an army surgeon taking part in the Normandy Landings and the utter chaos and lack of facilities afforded to him to saving lives.

On the Saturday afternoon we went and played tennis and, on the Sunday joined another couple for a competitive game of golf.I often found myself contemplating what I’d have done in the situations the characters were faced with. Not my normal reading genre, but thoroughly enjoyable plot, with conflicting family pressures introduced, resulting in complications covered without drama but more realistic reactions to a very unusual circumstance. No character is even slightly funny, it’s all hand-wringing, over-earnestness, and alpha make vs naive ‘new man’.
