Mina offers herself up as the Witch’s latest companion – yet the fate that awaits her is stranger and more wondrous than she can imagine…

Bitterthorn: A sapphic Gothic romance inspired by classic

While the truths Mina discovers are terrifying, love, longing and the realisation that “other people can be salvation” leads her to take a courageous path. Suspenseful, atmosphericand romantic, this is an utterly enchanting tale. Elora wants nothing more than an adventure, especially when she learns her parents are arranging a marriage for her. So she sets out to accomplish a task she’s meant to do for years - climb a large tree right to the top. But when she meets a dryad who offers her a chance at real a adventure she takes the opportunity to travel to Faerie and rescue a fae prince from his bondage to a queen of a different court. But it might be more than Elora anticipated but she has no choice - succeed or die. Blumwald is a town overshadowed by an ancient curse: in a sinister castle in the depths of the wild wood lives a monstrous Witch. Once a generation, she comes to claim a companion to return with her - never to be seen again. Klara found me in my room kneeling amongst my samples, smudged glasses perched on the bridge of my nose.I had the acute sensation of walking past the mouth of a cave, smelling the hot, rotting breath of the monster within. Overall, I really liked it as a respite after finishing Empire Ascendant which completely crushed my heart and soul. But... you know, not to have too high expectations. I hear someone use a term "popcorn book" lately which I kind of like and think might fit this book as well. It was really entertaining but it isn't a full course meal. I would recommend it though if you like overly dramatic yet slow gothic books, with a sapphic love story. There is a much less witching than the blurb would let you believe though... a b " Solanum incanum". Germplasm Resources Information Network. Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture . Retrieved 12 January 2010. It was less than a week now until the guests arrived, and all the bedrooms had been aired, fresh linens produced and flowers cut. The kitchens took in deliveries of beer and potatoes and flour and eggs and Riesling and vast wheels of cheese and sides of ham and even the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin sculpted from sugar. There was no safe refuge from the planning anywhere. In the mornings I went walking or put on my old skirts to work the apothecary garden outside the kitchens, tending lavender and sage and sorrel and mint while kitchen maids snipped great handfuls off with sharp scissors. When the weather was too bad, I kept to my room, reading and sorting through my geological collection. I borrowed polish and cloth from downstairs to work at each neglected piece of flint and basalt, limestone, dolomite and iron ore, taking the time to consider each in turn: the beauty in their harshness, the impossible compression of time into the palm of my hand. An infinite history that I could hold, and begin to understand.

International Flight (including flight between mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan and flight between Hong Kong/Macau and Taiwan): Klara and my stepmother had turned to us, all eyes on my embroidery. Johanna’s expression wavered between confusion and concern. ‘But what use is it? What is it for?’

I enjoyed the characters enough - I was SO there for the nerdy protagonist with an interest into geology and gradually herbalism & for the overly-dramatic mean and snarky witch with wild taste in fashion. (Btw this book gets the garments right! Shift under corset and stuff!) But as the ending neared I started to be a bit annoyed with them. As every proper gothic this book is based on Terrible Secret that the protagonist tries to unearth while the witch doesn't want her to know, because she considers herself a monster. With book based on figuring out something there is always the risk of drawing it for too long (or not drawing it out enough), so you end up with a protagonist that seems stupid. I thought it was well done for most part, but in the end when Mina finally figured things out her reaction was kind off of, because... you know, she's smart it shouldn't be this surprising to her. I also wouldn't say that the secret overall was underwhelming, it was pretty good, but I feel like the author could have get more from it. From the first line this was glorious and beautifully tender. A lyrical Gothic tale with strong fairytale elements about loneliness and love, and how the two intertwine. For travel involving multiple booking classes, the most restrictive fare rules apply to the entire itinerary In the distance, above the golden canopy of the dying forest, about as far as I could see on a clear, bright day, was the Witch’s castle.
