About this deal

RoboCop was a huge hit in theaters and yet it gained a far larger following on home video, beginning with a 1986 Orion VHS tape and lasting through multiple digital formats (it was reissued on VHS as late as 2000 and still hasn’t found its way to a 4K format yet). Note: We focussed mainly on the Disc 1 Director's Cut in 4K, and with that found some temporary issues which were all resolved with some gentle cleaning of the disc.

For what it’s worth, Verhoeven is right: The longer, gorier version is funnier, reveling in the sheer pointlessness of this machine’s depravity. Much of this world-building is introduced via TV soundbites that relate atrocity with a glibness that represents virtually no satirical exaggeration of news programs. Arrow's 4K release of Robocop comes in a number of different flavours - the Limited Edition boasting the now compulsory art cards and poster, but also a likely unmissable 80-Page Booklet packed with background information, images and interviews. RoboCop would be his Hollywood debut, though, since he made it after the troubled production of his first English language film, 1985’s Flesh + Blood , and, because he hadn’t worked with extensive special effects before, his success was not a matter of course.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The gorgeous 43-page booklet that comes with the 4K steelbook edition includes an in-depth essay by Henry Blyth that further breaks down the differences between the three cuts. RoboCop’s most remembered cash-ins were cyborg movies that ripped off its design and/or plot, including Cullen Blaine’s R. The enormous amount of bonus features found in that set make their way to this one too, including a 43-page booklet. Much like in my review of Arrow’s 4K UHD release of An American Werewolf in London, do I really need to give a synopsis of Robocop?

Which is to say that RoboCop has been subtly buffed up without compromising its aura of underground sleaziness. Such a theme can’t be laughed off as a trope, as it continues to be a selling point for carny politicians even as the nation’s crime rate drops. We will introduce you exclusively to Newpay finance products provided by NewDay Limited under this Introducer Appointed Representative arrangement. I appreciate that Arrow has taken a page from Criterion’s playbook and started putting booklets in some of their releases — it’s a nice touch that serves as a reminder that once upon a time, the vast majority of thoughts about movies were set down on paper. Take 1987’s RoboCop, which drops left-wing talking points in the middle of a vigilante thriller so sadistic it’d make Death Wish blush.Verhoeven’s peerlessly exciting and kinetic visuals were matched by a sharp script, iconic cast and exceptional special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Phil Tippett (The Empire Strikes Back).
