But yeah, I'd never thought I'd see the day when a Busted album is heavier than a Bring Me The Horizon album. While Night Driver stood as an entity resembling a fun-filled holiday, Half Way There as a record is a rapturous homecoming and I will happily go on record to say; Half Way There is the best Pop Punk album of the past five years!

Of course, given that Busted have never been a powerhouse band in terms of innovation or technical songcraft (because why would they be? It’s packed with catchy melodies, the three members shine on vocals and the lyrics are both personal and clever.Although annoying it’s the gimmick of this song that kinda saves it, in the ‘so trite you can laugh a lot about it’ way. But when that one concept is what your entire album is based on, it’s hard to get much enjoyment out of it, given that the only reason it actually exists is to remind the audience of how things were. Nineties opens the album and it’s essentially a modernised version of the music the band was making the first-time round.

A sentiment touched upon when Simpson, Bourne and Willis wail “ We’re not old / But we’re not as young as we used to be / Half way to obscurity” in the acoustic love letter, All My Friends, to their fanbase that touches upon the band’s belief that this is where they’re meant to be. We loved it, but I think for a fan wanting to hear Busted again, people had to readjust their mind as to what they were hearing. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. In that song’s chorus lyric ‘Where d’ya go, I’d be lost without you / It’s crazy, time moves slow / I ain’t seen you on the TV lately’, they all deliver the vocal with feeling and there’s a sense that in this version of the song, they’ve communicated the problems that ended their juggernaut of success so abruptly and got closure on that time to move forward to this new chapter. The highlight is the acoustic All My Friends, a song that veers into folk territory and laments growing up. Race to Mars and Reunion tap into the expected Busted hymnbook by offering familiar glimpses alas 2003’s A Present for Everyone, but with a rejuvenated vigour that sits comfortably among the very best of 2019’s pop punk royalty. It’s a super alienating song that only a few people in bands will relate to I guess, and even then not many. The started the campaign for the new album by playing three chaotic sold-out shows in a day at the 100 Club, and then dropped a throwback video for ‘Nineties’which revived the days of Top of the Pops, Blind Date, Nirvana and white-suited boy bands. A rush of melody and effervescent riffs that see the band blend huge arena-filling choruses with the classic pop-punk sound of Blink-182 and New Found Glory.
