About this deal

John Durnford-Slater's book 'Commando' is a page turner as he describes 'No 3 Commandos creation, and the men who wore the green beret. Brent Towns, a novelist from Australia, has written over 20 issues of Commando, many of which have featured Australian or New Zealand forces. With full and exclusive access to every level of the organisation, author and former Royal Marine Monty Halls tells the real stories of extraordinary individuals in latter day conflicts and on global operations: from the Mountain leaders in the Falklands War to high profile drugs busts in the Gulf; from amphibious raids in Iraq to feats of ultra endurance to raise money for their brethren in the veteran community. Neglected by scholars and journalists alike, the years of conflict in Vietnam from 1968 to 1975 offer surprises not only about how the war was fought, but about what was achieved.

Using genuine and faux military slang makes the book a touch more fun and keeps things light-hearted for potentially stressed readers. I loved it so much that I traveled to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna to see the Lipizzaner horses in person, and listened to the audiobook for a second time while traveling. After that book's publication , I’ve had readers reach out and ask about my favorite football novels, so I was thrilled to get the chance to compile them all into one list. Monty's love for the Royal Marines and admiration for the characters interviewed for the book (and BBC TV series) jumps out from the pages and his writing style draws you into a very special read.

and what comes across strongly is how the men just got on with things and stood up to the plate when they were needed. The work is well supported with illustrations and Maps, not only a page turner but also one is reluctant to put down.In August 2013, Prion (Carlton) Books released collections of Commandoes that each featured six stories, published in the original size. It's a lesson about war, but also about life – even with all the planning and the training, it's almost impossible to control what happens in the heat of battle. Durnford Slater sought intelligence, initiative and a sense of humour in his officers, perhaps recognising that sense of humour is the seventh core value of the Army. It’s also engulfed me like the blizzards of the Norwegian winter and taught me how ingenuity, perseverance, and grit are the keys to survival when the odds are overwhelming.

It is a really powerful book because his whole life has gone before him and he knows it's going to come to an end, and he really needs to tell everybody what he's feeling inside, so that's what makes it so amazing. Everything from the moon state, equipment carried by individual patrol members, route plan, timings and commanders intent are covered. Be it in the dense, humid jungles of Burma, Malaya and Borneo to the arid deserts of Iraq and Aden to contested and congested Northern Ireland and Afghanistan, across the oceans to the seas of the Gulf, the Caribbean, and the great Southern Ocean of the frozen fringe of Antarctica, 42 have truly served Per Mare Per Terram.

Absolutely loved it and highly recommend this book if you wish to read about Wars, Military Tactics, Israeli Arab Conflict. I served as an infantry platoon leader, reconnaissance platoon leader, and rifle company commander in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade.
