My only criticism is that there are a few instances of curious things happening and these are never explained. It was going well, but then in 2012 I got cancer, which was bloody inconvenient but precipitated an exciting hair journey from bald to a peroxide blonde Annie Lennox crop. So he collects random objects—meaningless to others—and imagines what they once meant to their owners. I used to imagine stories about the previous owners (and the ones before that, and so on) of these objects that ended up in our home. It was all going well, but then in 2012 I got cancer, which was bloody inconvenient but precipitated an exciting hair journey from bald to a peroxide blonde Annie Lennox crop.

The final pages of The Keeper of Lost Things manage to bring all of the plot threads together quite neatly, perhaps a little too neatly for some readers.

He doesn’t have many people in his life apart from has an assistant Laura; who he trusts and knows she is as lost as him and his gardener. She also has an underappreciated gift of being able to sense something of the history of an object, which is very interesting in the context of this book. And so it was that he began to gather other people's lost things; gather them in and keep them safe, just in case one day, one of them could mend a broken heart, and thus redeem a broken man.

My leading man, Anthony Peardew, was inspired by a former neighbour of mine who, I was told, became a reclusive hoarder after the tragic death of his fiancée. Unable to let go of her grief, she finds comfort in her faithful canine companion Haizum, and peace in the quiet lanes of her town's lido. Whether The Keeper of Lost Things is a story of happenstance, serendipity or the fickleness of fate is up to each reader to decide, but for me it was a gloriously clever and heartwarming story that belied its simple premise and gave me much to ponder. There is another couple whose story starts the day Anthony's fiance dies, all those years earlier, and their platonic love is just as strong as the love Anthony and his late fiance had for each other. The unique theme focuses on a very intriguing obsession of hoarding lost objects - not in a manner similar to Museum of Innocence, which was for personal indulgence, but in the hope that the items could be reunited with their owners. This book turned out to be way different than my usual reading, but I think in this case that was a good thing as I found much to enjoy in this quite charming novel.

I’ll always wonder when I look down and see little lost objects that we sometimes run across, about the person who lost it .The consensus was that Eunice and Bombers storylines were unnecessary and didn't really add to the story of the main protagonist (Laura). I really sniggered at many of the humorous passages: the WI lady's knowledge of something Italian she'd had in a restaurant, incidents with Portia and Sunshine's honesty.
