Incidentally, the Dutch term 'jenever' or 'jenever' was borrowed from Old French 'genevre' (modern French genièvre) meaning 'juniper tree', which in turn comes from the Latin word for the tree 'juniperus'. In 1689, King William of Orange had moved into Hampton Court Palace and immediately enacted a series of laws to encourage gin distillation, this is a tribute to his critical part in the launch of gin. We launched King William Gin after finding out he liberalised the manufacture of Gin in the UK with his first act of Parliament in 1690.

A local cure came from the bark of the chinchona or ‘fever’ tree, which contained the notoriously bitter quinine.Eyebrows were raised two years ago upon the release of King William Gin - named in honour of William of Orange, a revered figure among protestants and some Rangers fans.

Blood orange was the citrus of choice for this colourful zesty expression, boasting quite the colour too. Upon taking the throne and prior to the infamous Battle of The Boyne, King William, a fan of the Dutch spirit introduced a number of laws to encourage gin production including an import tax which resulted in the spirit being cheaper than a pint of beer. per cent ABV in a nod to the the Battle of the Boyne - will appeal to loyalists throughout Scotland as its launch in Glasgow approaches.Famous for jenever and liqueurs, De Kuyper was established in 1695 when newly wed Petrus de Kuyper founded the firm in Horst in Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands. The poorest people began drinking more gin less responsibly, meanwhile, royalty and high society sipped tamely as more of a fashion statement than an emotional or psychological release. The ICP found the use of two decimal places “unusual” and “intentional” and noted that it appeared without a percentage sign which “framed the number as a historical date reference in the context of King William of Orange”. The complaint was upheld meaning producers will now work with the Portman Group’s Advisory Service to change potentially offensive elements on the label. Not ones to be defeated, we headed back to Holland to Schiedam - the town where gin was born - and we turned to one of The Netherlands’ oldest and most experienced distilleries, to help us recreate the gin from the 1689 ingredients list alone using their centuries of spirits knowledge.
