There are just so many blatant historical inaccuracies that I could barely go 2 pages, if that, without having to look something up because I was damn sure it was just plain wrong - and 95% of the time, I was correct. At 8% in, I was already tired of the countless diversions, so I just had to browbeat myself into not caring so that I could just read.

Sarah Underwood's classical reimagining is woven with pure magic: salt-laced myths, a plot that slowly unravels like a tapestry, and vivid characters who are destined to steal your heart. as a Poseidon's creature, able to manipulate water and with scales and the ability of breathe underwater.Faithfulness" is often compromised in adaptation (for good or for ill) for the sake of reconfiguring the story to audiences beyond those the work was originally intended. Again, this makes me think the author reads a lot of medieval fantasy (or watches too much GoT) and doesn’t know that all that stuff doesn’t actually translate into Ancient Greece. it’s almost impressive how, every time I think the worst possible YA twist on ancient Greek mythology has been dragged out from the bucket of slime from whence Madeline Miller crawled, something new manages to surprise me. Now you understand why I don't read Greek myth retellings anymore even though it's my favourite mythology?

Thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins Books/HarperTeen Books for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. leto must kill the prince of ithica, mathias (what is that name bro), to break the curse that sends twelve maidens to be sacrificed by hanging to poseidon. In the cursed kingdom of Ithaca, each spring brings the hanging of twelve maidens, a gift to the vengeful Poseidon.

I was lucky enough to get to read this book, and after the high hopes from the synopsis, I was still blown away! All the awesome lesbian, trans, or queer characters in the world will not fix the problems I have with this girls lack of respect for the origin story, the legacy of it, and that she doesn’t get to just rip-off the parts of any story she wants. now, the article in which she admitted this has been removed, for obvious reasons, but there are still screenshots floating around, for obvious reasons. I have to say, firstly, that I have very, very, little knowledge of Greek mythology so read this novel primarily as a fantasy read. I have various translations; there are parts that are very beautiful and readable, but it’s so long, and written in a ‘prose-y’ way that’s kind of impenetrable.
