Description

I have found this book to be interesting but not necessarily the most helpful to figure out certain methods. The self-assessment tasks and suggestions for further reading should ensure that teachers feel well prepared to teach the mathematics contained in the book. I am able to follow the explanations as everything is made clear, the video guidance helps too along with knowledge checks.

Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers develops your understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, and how children learn them, so you can confidently teach mathematics to primary children. Join a cast of entertaining bugs as they explore maths through everyday examples, from handling numbers and times tables to weighing ingredients and telling the time. This edition tackles written calculation algorithms with clarity and detail; the emphasis on children understanding these processes and how to support this is maintained throughout. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Good visual supports, such as number lines, base 10 blocks and arrow cards, supplement the written text and consolidate understanding. Of particular use are the ‘teaching points’ sections and links to video explanations and further practice.

There are good illustrations on the use of physical representations to support addition and subtraction with very clear guidance on how to use base ten materials and coins. Easily understood for someone who didn't like maths at school and has to now teach it (and it's my favourite subject to teach! Checking Understanding questions are designed to help you check your own knowledge of terminology, understanding of key concepts and principles, and your mastery of important skills.LEARNING AND TEACHING POINTS: Feel confident in the classroom with these key points to remember when planning and teaching. This provides further practice for our students to be able to strengthen their subject knowledge, in preparation for teaching key areas of the National Curriculum.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Major teaching points in number have been missed and the emphasis of using Dienes material and money for exploring place value and pre-partitioned shapes for fractions is unhelpful. As always this book will prove to be an invaluable asset to not only trainee teachers, but as many have agreed also after school experience placements.

There is still a huge reliance in the book of using bare numbers to explain concepts and a lack of use of concrete resources or visuals to demonstrate conceptual understanding and how to teach these concepts effectively to children. The book is written in the accessible and engaging style we have come to expect from Derek Haylock, and is informed by his wealth of experience. Including six sections: Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling, Comprehension, Multiplying, Dividing and Times Tables. Fully aligned to the primary National Curriculum for maths, Times Tables Ninja features an introduction for teachers explaining the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach and the vocabulary to use when teaching times tables. Lesson Plan Activities by Ralph Manning support content-focused chapters and contain creative mathematics tasks across the primary age range.

With over 700 tested questions endorsed by primary PGCE trainees, along with detailed solutions and explanatory notes, the Student Workbook helps you gain the confidence you need to understand, apply and teach the primary maths curriculum. The activities in this photocopiable book gives Key Stage 2 pupils all the tools they need to gain fluency in multiplication and division up to their 12 times tables. During his first in school placement, as he was with yr 6 students, he found this an invaluable resource as he hadn’t studied any primary maths teaching in his first year of study at university. This user-friendly interactive book makes concepts simple and gives you the confidence and knowledge to learn and teach mathematics to primary children.
