Description

This 21st-century graphic novel version of Constance Maude’s No Surrender charts the plight of Suffragettes at the beginning of the last century. But seeking electoral equality was not progressing quickly and the cause was on the cusp of employing more direct – and sometimes violent – action. No Surrender review: graphic novel reworks Suffragette classic

A male advocate of the socialist cause is interested in Jenny, but she knows that their paths lie in different directions, and that her solidarity with the cause and other women may well end in her imprisonment. In this faithful graphic adaptation, creators Scarlett and Sophie Rickard craft a compelling fiction that paints a comprehensive picture of social, political, economic and cultural life in early 20th-century Britain that is still acutely relevant today. It feels like an addition to the tacitly accepted, everyday domestic violence all women were subjected to. These pages, telling of the Suffragettes’ punishment, are – much like the penultimate chapters of Matyáš Namai’s 1984 – hard to look at. Thankfully, no efforts have been made to update the original 1911 text, which was groundbreaking in its presentation of both working women and the British and American women of status who supported them. This version is in full vibrant colour and reveals the stories of the characters, which were based on real people, including mill workers from Lancashire and wealthy society women.

Not that men are excluded – they are often opposed to the fight but some clear sighted men are sympathetic and supportive. The prison sections have a haunting and memorable quality conveyed by the drawing and the careful use of colour. Tressell was a decorator who wrote about economics from his working-class point of view, and died in poverty in 1911 before it was published,” says Scarlett. Trapped beyond the perception of his friends, family and allies, Pietro must now wage a one-man guerilla war against a monster that he's not even sure is real - to save a world that he may never be a part of again! We observe them as they convert the most unlikely individuals to their cause, endure the hardships of prison as a consequence of their beliefs, humiliate the powerful (one scene set at a posh dinner party is particularly memorable here), and continue to push back at social injustice wherever it rears its ugly head.At the same time a number of interweaving plot threads surrounding the pair’s families and friends allow us to experience reactions to the issues raised from a number of different perspectives.

There are crises throughout the book – as arrests are made and protests occur in prisons which test everyone’s beliefs. It was against this backdrop that novelist Constance Maud penned No Surrender – a heartfelt work of fiction that tells the story of two women working to secure their democratic rights. Jenny’s focus has become the fight for the vote for women which she sees is the route to equality before the law and genuine hope for women. No Surrender, they felt, could be tweaked to bring Maud’s message to an audience 110 years after it was written. Along with friends from every walk of life, she brings the fight to the Prime Minister’s door – and suffers for her cause. It was a difficult book in prose form, and we wanted to make it more accessible because it contains important ideas.
