Description

He received the nickname Dracula and Vlad the Impaler from his enemies as he was known for his love of torture and impaling his enemies with wooden stakes. Thompson devotes a chapter to Whitby’s Goths, who bring a lot of colour and character to this seaside resort (see our earlier blog on Whitby Goth Weekend). It is full of pirate graves that look just like the ones I found for real last year on a cliff in Whitby, North Yorkshire. The Bram Stoker Memorial Seat was erected by Scarborough Council and the Dracula Society on April 20th, 1980 in memory of the 68th anniversary of his death. From the Royal Crescent where Stoker was staying, to the dramatic headland, Stoker gathered ideas and inspiration everywhere he went.

Find out how Bram Stoker’s visit to the harbour town of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast in 1890 provided him with atmospheric locations for a Gothic novel – and a name for his famous vampire. The attraction that has been here for the past 15 years, aims to retell the story of Dracula through its haunted house-style rooms. Whitby’s windswept headland, the dramatic abbey ruins, a church surrounded by swooping bats, and a long association with jet – a semi-precious stone used in mourning jewellery – gave a homegrown taste of such thrilling horrors. I now believe this item is out of print and may not be reprinted, so its unlikely this seller has any of tese books to sell, even though it is still listed as being available. It’s encompassed by the North York Moors National Park and can be accessed along with the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coastal road. I was struck by the amount of headstones that read ‘in memory of’ rather than ‘here lies…’ The list of people remembered here who were lost at sea must be sizeable.

The story is well known worldwide and brought the idea of an undead, blood-thirsty creature into popular culture.Wilkinson’s history mentioned a 15th-century prince named Vlad Tepes (also known as Vlad the Impaler), who was said to have impaled his enemies on wooden stakes. There are little bits of Whitby to be found throughout Stoker’s novel, including, of course, our famous 199 steps to the abbey. In fact, the name of Dracula’s first victim, Swales, is taken from one of the weather-beaten gravestones which cluster around St Mary’s Church, standing proudly on the East Cliff.

High above Whitby, and dominating the whole town, stands Whitby Abbey, the ruin of a once-great Benedictine monastery, founded in the 11th century. Whether you head on up the coast or inland to Yorkshire, you’ll never run out of beautiful places that’s for sure.

Trillo’s, a famous ice cream company in Whitby, released their Whitby Jet black ice creams this year and they are devilishly delicious! It features heavily in Bram Stoker’s novel and, you’ll be pleased to know that English Heritage keeps the Dracula theme alive here too.

It’s also famous for the Shambles which inspired J K Rowling to invest Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. He’d been recommended to stay in our coastal town by actor Henry Irving after the two had finished a theatrical tour of Scotland. If you’ve done your Dracula homework, you’ll know the character originates in Transylvania, Romania. Below the abbey stands the ancient parish church of St Mary, perched on East Cliff, which is reached by a climb of 199 steps.
