It may be that you need a particular resource before you can achieve a certain goal, and that first resource you need will be made available to you by one of your other cards. Each of the five available character cards offers something quite unique – such as an extra disc with the value of two to use in the Auction phase, or the ability to break the Capital Disc placement rules. There is a political message on unregulated, nepotistic capitalism here; the irony of Russians making such a game makes it ever more pronounced.

Another way to identify a “modern classic” is seeing it get expansions, and Furnace has begun this journey with Interbellum. In any given round, there will be a card—maybe two—with the particular effect that best suits a given player’s strategy on the bottom. I rarely purchase games based on the artwork, but this is one of those that drew me in from first sight. The discs are numbered one to four, and the highest disc on the card at the end of the Auction round wins that card. But really, these extra cards are just icing on the cake; this is an absolutely excellent expansion for an excellent game.

Additionally, every player starts with 1 coal in addition to the other resources on their Startup card. Enjoy the immersive atmosphere of Art Deco, Constructivism, and Bauhaus with stunning industrial building and structure designs. To do this, more often than not, they will need to trade coal into steel, steel into oil and oil into cash. Each round, a number of company cards (based on the number of players) will be available for auction. But has enough depth to explore a few different strategies thanks in large part to a unique mechanism. It’s high stakes too: with only four rounds, you need to take every opportunity to make money or you’ll fall behind fast. One of my favorite games of recent years is 2020’s Furnacefrom Arcane Wonders and designer Ivan Lashin. The joy of Furnace is the angst of the auction juxtaposed with the fun of engine building, but quite often the engine building aspect is fairly procedural.

This adds a c-c-combo element to the Production phase that just feels great, and every token feels interesting and powerful. I would be lying if I failed to admit the superficial fact that my interest in Furnace had everything to do with its box. Once everyone has collected their compensation and the cards that they won in the Auction phase, players will then move into the Production phase. To upgrade, you’ll need to spend resources along with the token, making timing your upgrades critical. It’s not just that getting another card or pile of resources each round means that the Production phase takes longer each round, but the Auction phase is almost doubled (granted, it was short) due to the time players will take to think through the implications of the new bidding disc. Players can bid on any card available but can never place a disc onto a card where they have already made a bid. Furnace will run for four rounds Each time running through the Auction and then the Production phase. The gorgeous industrial box art was what originally drew me into this game published by Arcane Wonders.

After all the compensation is done and the factories are claimed, they are placed in front of the players that won them.Upgrade tokens are also valuable because they make your existing factories more efficient, which is valuable early in the game. During the production phase, you can use each of your cards once to gain resources, process those resources into other resources or money, and upgrade your cards.
