Well, I watched it the day it arrived and it was just what I had hoped, great picture and amazing audio. Admittedly, Jing Tian, as ruthless businesswoman Liwen Shao, offers another mildly worthwhile character whose turn in the third act generates some amusing laughs.

No, it's got as much as the Blu-ray in the highlights, if people are seeing worse highlight retention in the UHD then that's on their TV's tone mapping. Warner Bros has elected to only include the bonus materials that were on the original release's 2D Blu-ray. If you enjoyed the first film, with lowered expectations, you'll likely still get some entertainment value out of the second. However this is very much a silver lining on a dark cloud, with the cost of these Bayisms mostly involving lightweight, inconsequential action with none of the darker undertones from the first movie and not even the slightest feeling that any character was in any real jeopardy (or that you'd care). Unlike its lesser counterparts, Del Toro’s beast blends some element of consequence into the mix, putting human lives at the heart of his skyscraper-sized creations and pitting them against increasingly dangerous monsters that are remarkably hard to kill. I haven't seen some of the heavy hitters mentioned in this thread yet but for me the most impressive have been Warcraft and War For The Planet of the Apes in 4K HDR on my AppleTV. It clearly would have been a lot better with del Toro attached, although, for a directorial debut, Steven S.

These are good numbers and suggest high image quality without significant artifacts from starvation from inadequate bitrate (remember, video is always "lossy"). After the opening recap, we're introduced to two of these pilots – brothers Yancy and Raleigh Becket. As a direct follow-up to Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 sci-fi mecha actioner, Pacific Rim Uprising is relatively satisfying, sure to meet expectations of hardened fans while leaving others wanting more. HDR and WCG make the real difference, though, as tech panels become eye-searing in intensity, the palette popping with a vibrancy that often belies the lack of an added dimension, and richer tones vivid throughout. Uprising is actually a reasonably well put together sequel that just played it too light and Michael Bay-like for its own good; bring back del Toro for a second sequel and maybe you'd bring the fans back too. With fantastic special effects, tons of action, and a wildly loud sound effects, it's everything that a blockbuster should be. The below video score and related critique of things here are based solely upon my viewing of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation of Pacific Rim. With the advent of 4K and the slow death of 3D, we have already seen the Dredd 4K release excel even without its added dimension, and Pacific Rim - likely one of the top 10 3D demo titles - comfortably follows suit, so much so that even early 3D adopters may never look back after having enjoyed the title in its new 4K garb. Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket [Charlie Hunnam] is introduced to us in this opening sequence, which sets the scene with the aforementioned exposition, gives you a spectacular battle scene in stormy weather, and a very visually arresting conclusion.

DeKnight also deserves some credit for taking over and doing surprisingly well considering he's following up a proven visual master like Del Toro.

Pacific Rim remains a spectacular demo title which enjoys an upgrade for its 4K release in terms of full 3D immersive HD audio courtesy of a Dolby Atmos track, itself founded upon an already reference Dolby TrueHD 7. In the situation here, with a 2K DI, there's clearly nothing to be gained compared to an excellent upscaler like madVR NGU.

Pacific Rim has a very "fake" HDR grade that takes the highlights visible in the SDR version and boosts them into hundreds, even thousands of nits (MaxCLL is like 2400 nits on this disc! The limitations of the standard blu-ray are obvious on a 4ktv, I want to upgrade just so the scenes with rain don't become a flurry of compression artifacts. VUDU has also announced support for HDR10, but I haven't heard specifics about when that will be available.Whether you see it or not, the film fits right into the heart of the summer blockbuster action lineup with its sheer gargantuan size alone. After a couple of false stars, director Guillermo Del Toro finally gets another movie under his belt, with a film designed to appeal to the big kid in all of us.
