At forty, Paul Biegler's world seemed to have come to an end: after ten years as DA in his small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the people had elected a new hero, a young army veteran. Problem is, while perfectly human and understandable, it was still murder, and Manny's been in jail ever since, trial pending. Well I will say for a book written in the 1950's this was a topic I did not expect to be, and then I found out it was a very popular book and made into a movie. We know from the first that there was a murder, and we know who did it right from the first, so most of this is courtroom drama, but written as a former DA who knows the terrain. It was okay when I pictured Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch while I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird.

For example, there was the time a kid farted really loudly during my lecture about gerunds, and there were a bunch of accusations and counter-accusations about who dealt it and who smelt it and who denied it and who supplied it.A (Dutton, 1954), this transfers its technicalities to a fiction treatment of a murder and its trial, locating these doings on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where a long experienced prosecuting D. Martin's in 1958, Robert Traver's Anatomy of a Murder immediately became the number-one bestseller in America, and was subsequently turned into the successful and now classic Otto Preminger film. Dialogue is natural; supernatural, actually, in its wittiness and quickness - this is the way I wish I could talk (except less chauvinistic).
