About this deal

The setting is incredibly engrossing, and since I'm not very familiar with the part of history the world was based on (medieval Nigeria I believe), it was fascinating to learn about. There is so much myth, fantasy and genuinely great storytelling packed into the pages of this novel. I loved this story, I think it was beautifully done, and if you’re a fan of strong female-led fantasy rich in culture and history, this one's for you. Imagining myself walking through the forest along with Naala and her friends was an adventure in and of itself.

I had fun following the paths of Naala and Sinai respectively, learning about the past of the kingdom and its various gods, watching the girls grow through their experiences and into their destinies. The only thing that frustrates me is that they didn’t meet until the end of the book, I was dying for them to meet already.

The nature and people are described colorful, I loved Amayo's writing it made everything spring to life. More often than not, her impulsivity was good and actually helped the rest of the characters out of bad situations. I’m still extremely interested in reading more from the series though as I love this world, and really do enjoy the characters.

The actress, Weruche Opia who narrators the audiobook has a great voice which makes for a smooth listening experience. I gobbled up the story of Naala and Sanai, desperate to know where the legends and prophecies would take them next, hoping everything would turn out OK.Overall, Daughters of Nri is a novel inspired by medieval Nigeria that is all parts dramatic and wondrous. The story has spark, but for me it failed to ignite and ended up losing the initial curiosity I had going on. She felt a little harder for me to connect to and I did find her plot to be a bit slower and lower stakes at first. Other thing that bothered me, was the end with the Villain Monologue and the combat scene that wasn't satisfying. When I first heard about "Daughters of Nri", I was super excited at the prospect of two strong female protagonists!

I’m so appreciative of authors that include glossaries and maps because it makes unknown words and even just general visualisation so much easier. The overall concept and plotline is great, and although it isn't the most out-of-the-box storyline I've ever read, it definitely hits on some unique ideas. Amayo’s “Daughters of Nri” is a fantasy novel rooted in African legends and mythology, which makes for a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed exploring a completely new world with a different setting. As for characters, I particularly really loved Sinai and her plotline; I wished Naala had a little bit more development as I felt I didn’t know her as deeply as I knew Sinai.
