Woo may not have made his best film here, but it was easily one of his best US outings, and he inarguably worked wonders with the ingredients he had, making Van Damme into an eminently cool action icon and certainly delivering his best flick, whilst crafting a bona fide action classic in the process. A great supporting cast including Yancy Butler, Lance Henriksen, Kasi Lemmons, Arnold Vosloo, and a highly entertaining turn from Wilford Brimley ensures there's never a dull moment. A stiff actor even at his best, Van Damme is further hampered by attempting a Cajun accent, and his greasy mullet was pretty questionable even in 1993.John Woo's touch is felt in virtually every single sequence, but the magic that made The Killer and Hard Boiled legendary action films is quite simply missing here. Despite his ridiculous permed mullet, Van Damme moves with a savage grace in this picture and Woo, ever the stylist, ensures that he's captured from just the right angle every single time.

Independently owned and operated publications like Slant have been hit hard in recent years, but we’re committed to keeping our content free and accessible—meaning no paywalls or fees. As far as the bad guys go, Lance Henriksen is perfect here as the man in charge, chewing just enough scenery to create a memorable character while Arnold Vosloo is equally good and surprisingly intense as the strong, silent type. I used to think it was my oled tv or Panasonic 4K player that was causing the issue but now that it’s happening in this disc I’m not so sure. The actor is a perfect match for Woo’s balletic sense of choreography, moving fluidly whether kicking a gas can toward a henchman’s face before blowing it up with a shotgun or executing a perfect karate strike. Chuck Pfarrer’s script, about elites hunting men on the streets of New Orleans for sport, has a component of class commentary, which is heightened by the fact that the prey are homeless military veterans.

He'd just come off his tour de force Chow Yun-Fat actioner, Hard Boiled - arguably the best film in his career, and certainly one of the best action thrillers of all time - and found the transition to Hollywood difficult, not least because of the restrictions placed upon him, and the emphasis on front-end management by the production studios, but also because of the problems he encountered whilst working with a diva lead actor. A man named Emil Fouchon (Lance Henriksen) and his right hand man Pik van Cleef (Arnold Vosloo) have given him a money belt with ten grand in cash inside. Rounding out the supporting cast - I’ve always been surprised that Yancy Butler never really hit it big. Still, the official international cut is a quality action film even with all the troubles behind the scenes, taking the classic story from The Most Dangerous Game and updating it to a contemporary setting. The detail they've pulled from the print is exceptional, giving the '93 flick a new lease of life, with close ups to die for, fabulous skin texturing and background nuances; hair, clothing, weaponry all looking so finely observed it's frequently jaw-dropping.

Universal Pictures UK will celebrate the 30th anniversary of John Woo's action thriller Hard Target (1993) with a brand new Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray SteelBook, which will be available for purchase on June 26th. In playback, the audio issues aren't fatally bad, and actually the flickering DV layer on the video may well prove to be the real death sentence to playback, certainly for those who haven't got the option to watch without.I think that the 4K master that was prepared on behalf of Kino Lorber is very solid, plus there is a fine selection of exclusive new bonus features. To make things worse, Van Damme's arsenal of simple English words is so small that at times it is truly painful to watch him confront his opponents.

We've updated the audio portion of our review after receiving the corrected 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with proper 5.Presenting Woo’s preferred 100-minute Unrated International Cut, there are still some uneven bits, small instances of slight speckling.
