About this deal

With Gemma then in a coma, what follows is a complex whodunit with a list of suspects that continues to grow the further you read. There’s ultimately a lot made of the fact that Thomas and Viv strive obsessively to appear ‘perfect’ to the outside world. A much-used word, karma is loosely understood as a system of checks and balances in our lives, of good actions and bad deeds, of good thoughts and bad intentions. Is he deluding himself as he clings on tight, tight, tight to the hope that this could just be a terrible and horrible coincidence?

These snapshots provide subtle clues about the present circumstances and I loved being able to piece it all together. I don't like to give anything away, but I strongly urge everyone to read this book, won't disappoint! But when she stumbles and falls on stage during the ceremony, a beautiful moment turns to chaos: Gemma has been shot, and just like that, she’s fighting for her life. Gemma is a working mum who often feels pulled in all directions and I completely identify with that! This makes Alex laugh for the first time and Matthew feels another shift inside; the guy in the blanket no longer sounding like or looking like a man who has any intention whatsoever of ending his life.

Of course it could be that I read too many books about dysfunctional families so don’t realise how little pressure is required to bring someone to tipping point.

I do like multiple narrators if the author can make them all sound like different people — or objects; I’ve read books in which an object narrates. A little girl of 4 is given a letter for her daddy by a nice woman, yet everyone is worries the little girl might have a trauma deepened by this. I love the uncertainty of what the future will hold and the thousands of possibilities it leaves in its wake.In addition, some of the narrative is before the accident, giving readers a greater understanding of Gemma's past, along with her parents too. Nothing I predicted was right, and I feel like the ending came out of left field and wasn’t even that good of a twist? Posts that have been commissioned will be labelled as sponsored or collaborative based on the brand’s preference. It’s a time to celebrate the achievement, so for this book to turn that on its head and have it as a tragedy really made me stop and think how lucky I am to have had the perfect graduation. Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original.
