Although a black cat attempts to stop Max, he recklessly lights a strange-looking candle to show that he doesn't believe in superstitions. But this book did leave me sitting on the fence a little bit, which is why I have gone down the middle and awarded 3 stars. Even the bullies get a bit more oomph, being described as kids who their kindergarten teacher best defined as persistent.

The perfect spooky story to read during the autumn/fall season, especially if you’re a 90s kid who’s feeling nostalgic. Pero cuando me enteré que iba a salir el primer libro ilustrado por el gran Gris Grimly no pude evitar comprarlo. If they can keep the witches from sucking the life force from the town's children until the sun rises, the Sanderson sisters will turn to dust. And my curious question-The spell book had the list of names whom apparently owned it, but Winifred was NOT the last to have it.In general, the book seemed to give Allison a tiny bit more of a part, as a STEM student that Max had admired for awhile before Halloween. The dust jacket features an illustration by Grimly, but when you take this off, you see that the covers of the book are in a lovely red colour with a design in black, making it look like an older book. Now it is up to Max, his little sister Dani, Alison, and their new friend, a talking black cat named Binx, to stop the sisters from regaining their beloved spell book. And there were definitely some moments that I would’ve wanted illustrations of but didn’t get, yet other illustrations in the book that either felt repetitive or that I wasn’t crazy about. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I was still drawn into the story because of the great writing and word choice.

There are only two or three scenes that really aren't in the movie and I can't tell if it is just my bias as someone who is so familiar with the movie or if they really are cheesy scenes. Three hundred years later, in 1993, teenage Max and his 8 year old sister Dani have just moved with their family to Salem from California.I really loved this illustrated take on a classic; it was the perfect shot of nostalgia to prepare for Halloween! It was fun to fill in the little holes of the character emotions and movement of the story with the author's words as the story progresses. Apparently the movie is now a cult classic (I have never seen it) starring Bette Midler as the evil head witch Winnifred Sanderson. There were a few (very small) newly-added bits that I wanted to read more about, but they weren’t the focus and didn’t get the time they deserved.

The only improvement I did see was an added scene where Max apologizes for Dani having talked about Allison's "yabos", to which Allison responds "You don't have to apologize for her, Dani didn't do anything wrong. There is a several incidents like this, where the 17th century witches encounter modern wonders that mystify them. It was like I was seeing the movie in my head while I was reading and it was such a wonderful feeling. I recently saw the book in a local Target and decided to give it a go because of my memories watching the movie with my daughter.

At several points, an editor could have been utilized to clean up portions that were poorly conveyed — things that were written to capture an image from the film (leading to confusion or redundancy in the writing) or oddly placed breaks that only make sense as scene changes on screen (but not so much on paper). Using the script from the film and stunning, full-color illustrations from the immensely talented Gris Grimly, I loved this book! The book is a hefty, handsome tome - perfect for your fall coffee table decor, even if you don't choose to read it. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. I made a point of reading a little bit of this every night before bed, laying it on top of my cozy orange blanket.
