There is some print damage in the shot that pans across the faces of the crew as they witness the figurehead of Hera speak (this has always been present), but, all things considered, this is remarkably blemish-free and clean. Once you get used to Effects Artist Randall William Cook's lethargic speech and preponderance for “Errrrms”, you will find this to be a treasure-trove of reminiscence, trivia, hard fact and know-how, and often painstaking examinations of the very visionary work that would foster such ambitions and dreams in the minds of people who would go on become premier players in the world of fantastic cinema, despite those extraordinary visions now looking quaint and primitive to modern audiences. I can see why Jason and the Argonauts is huge with Harryhausen fans like me, but I can also see why it's not a really great film--Jason's quest is very selfish and we never actually see him reap the rewards he wants. With the amount of grain still intact DNR doesn't seem to be an issue, and there may be some edge enhancement but it's most likely just due to the application of the effects. and effects people Phil Tippet, Ken Ralston, the late Stan Winston, Rick Baker, Dennis Muren, John Dykstra and the Chiodo Brothers all love the Cyclops and revere Harryhausen.

Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons. A selection of trailers includes one original British trailer -- it's on the poky side and doesn't emphasize the Dynamation effects enough -- and some trailers and TV spots from the 1975-'76 reissue. Whoever oversaw production of the Criterion laser disc of the movie saw that these sequences had been improperly reproduced for video since the initial VHS presentation, and the two sequences had always before been trabsferred as though they were daylight sequences. The handling of Medea is whitewashed from the mythology as I suppose it has to be for a "general audiences" film.But, one of the coolest treats is seeing the concept art and test footage Harryhausen made for his interpretation of H. I'm sure anyone who grew up loving older sci-fi and fantasy films is familiar with the name Ray Harryhausen. Those foreigners beyond the clashing rocks have exactly what Greece needs, a magic charm that brings peace, plenty and prosperity.There's a reason why the movie doesn't dig into the psychology behind the myths -- Jason and the Argonauts is a splendid fantasy of spectacular adventure. The scratching of Harpy claws on the stone pillar is more acute, and their horrific shrieking is slightly more shrill.
