Description

After years of telling my children that Just Good Friends was the best thing ever on TV, especially the Christmas special. Five years and a chance meeting later Penny's feelings are rekindled feelings that she thought were gone forever.

The set-up is simple: charming Jack-the-lad turf accountant wanders back into the life of advertising secretary Penny Warrender, having jilted her at the altar five years previously. Written by John Sullivan ( Only Fools And Horses, Citizen Smith), this is a classic story of love, lost and found, where the question on everyone's lips is will Vince and Penny remain 'just good friends'? We had to keep reverting back to the copyright foreword to try and understand why this was happening! She’s a real bunny boiler hell bent on not just splitting up Vince and Penny but taking half his fortune. Insisting that they would remain 'just good friends' but with emotions resurfacing a classic love-hate, on-off relationship is (once again) established. Nicholas’ Vince has a touch of the Del Boy about him, Sullivan not always making it clear if he is the cad he often appears, which has the effect of making him a curiously unsympathetic leading man. In 'Happy Birthday Penny', Penny decides to tell her parents that she's moving in with Vince as they celebrate her birthday. We will publish your review of Just Good Friends - Complete Series 1-3 on DVD within a few days as long as it meets our guidelines. Meeting up five years after that fateful day, Sullivan starts to weave a story of confusion, lies and misunderstandings which will see the couple through three series and one Christmas special.

Exacerbating Vince and Penny's predicament are both sets of parents, Vince's - Les and Rita - are all leopard print and Brylcreem, whilst Penny's - Daphne and Norman - are quite the opposite, wine tasting and twin set types.

While the show seemed to reach a natural end with Penny leaving the country in series two, audiences demanded a happier ending and it was brought back for another series and a very odd Christmas special. Written by John Sullivan (Only Fools and Horses, Citizen Smith), this is a classic story of love, lost and found, where the question on everyone's lips is will Vince and Penny remain 'just good friends'? Exacerbating Vince and Penny's predicament are both sets of parents Vince's - Les and Rita - are all leopard print and Brylcreem whilst Penny's - Daphne and Norman - are quite the opposite wine tasting and twin set types. John Sullivan's 1983 hit sitcom Just Good Friends bucks this trend; it even seems quite modern today.

Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis are outstanding in their roles as Vince, the cockney, unreliable, Jack-the-lad with a witty one-liner for every occasion, and Penny, the posh, prim and proper lady. There are one or two of the plot lines that aren’t very believable and some of the characters are a bit OTT but overall I can strongly recommend this box set.
