New York Times Loneliness, boredom, These are the complaints that Rollo May encountered over and over from his patients.

On the other hand, I am sure I would have written much differently about this book, had I met it 3 years back. After reading this multiple times, it has helped me be more in the present (in a non-corny way) and appreciate life more honestly (including conflicts and challenges). They crave after attention and respect, believing rather compulsively that these things will be sufficient for happiness and meaning.

Kitap adından da anlaşılacağı üzere bir insanın benlik inşası ve bulunduğu zamanla ve mekanla bütünleşmesi hakkında yazılmış. In this vein, one of the frustrating limitations of the Freudian and neo-Freudian tradition was the use of individual case histories as evidence to support their theories. As the fever in our example is a symptom of the battle between the bodily powers and the infecting germs, so anxiety is evidence of a battle between our strength as a self on one side and a danger which threatens to wipe out our existence as a self on the other. Freedom, according to May, is moving beyond the outer-directed personality, beyond taking his values from parents and society; it is moving beyond rebellion and values that exists as negation. The frontier has been conquered; the Victorian morals have been helplessly outdated since the 1920s; the bourgeoisie values no longer provide direction. But, when you read it, you find a very few psychological references and, insted of them, you can find a lot of phylosophical, biblical or theatral references to explain a psychological fact.

Rollo May ile tanışmama vesile olan bu kitabı psikolojik danışmanlık ve rehberlik alanında yüksek lisans yapan bir arkadaşımın hediye etme vasıtasıyla okumuş oldum. That is; I found much of the writing here overly verbose, and the excessive pontificating, especially in the latter part, a bit frustrating. In other words, the most common problem now is not social taboos on sexual activity or guilt feeling about sex in itself, but the fact that sex for so many people is an empty, mechanical and vacuous experience. Thus the person who can die courageously at thirty—who has attained a degree of freedom and differentiation that he can face courageously the necessity of giving up his life—is more mature than the person who on his deathbed at eighty cringes and begs still to be shielded from reality.

He is often associated with humanistic psychology and existentialist philosophy, and alongside Viktor Frankl, was a major proponent of existential psychotherapy. They begin from themselves, and not from others, as a foundation for love, open to what is possible, affirming who they are through their choices, not only in action but in attitude. Verdict: For Psychoanalysis, cut the middlemen and rush to books by founding fathers post-haste, everybody else heavily uses them in their own books anyway. To be in the crowd but still maintain the “sweetness of solitude,” as Emerson said, to have integrity while still learning from tradition and culture, is to possess inner strength. They do what everyone expects from them to do—from their teachers, employers, parents, religions, and communities — or at least, what they imagine these groups expect.

Meanwhile, unlike the species, each individual is born completely helpless and dependent on the parents.Varoluşçu edebiyat ve felsefe ile lise zamanlarımdan beri ilgilenmeme rağmen varoluşçu psikolojiyle ilgili hiçbir okuma yapmamıştım daha önce. Though this cannot be done through the deus ex machina of a ‘cosmic papa,’ it can be achieved through the individual’s confronting directly the various crises of his development, moving from dependence to greater freedom and higher integration by developing and utilizing his capacities, and relating to his fellows through creative work and love. She must be highly gregarious, not intellectual or conspicuous, and she must have very “sensitive antennae” (again that radar set! But they neglect responsibility by chaining themselves to addiction, security, comfort, and gratification, avoiding what is uncertain and mysterious, fearful and painful.
