Only the footprints of her discoverer disturb the snow which fell overnight – and which stopped just shortly after Marcia was last seen alive. Ich habe permanent mitgerätselt und Theorien aufgestellt, die am Ende jedoch durch eine tolle und komplexe Aufklärung durchweg wiederlegt wurden. J. Jefferson Farjeon wrote many a novel back in the day and the reprinting of Mystery in White has apparently been very successful, with good reason - it's a fast-paced, atmospheric little adventure with quirky characters and a double, seemingly disconnected murder to solve. When he died at Hove in Sussex in 1955 his obituary in The Times wrote of his "deserved popularity for ingenious and entertaining plots and characterization".

But a deserted house where a bread knife lays on the floor, the kettle is boiling, the fires are lit and tea is laid. Several incidents keep the unexpected houseguests busy and engaged, and Farjeon's plotting has a similar effect on the reader. Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: The supernatural aspects of the story are heavily implied to be true, but never outright confirmed. for a stand-alone about a police detective, a developmentally delayed boy, and a package everyone in North Dakota wants to grab. Many of his novels were in the mystery and detective genre although he was recognised as being one of the first novelists to entwine romance with crime. Farjeon is now best known as the author of Number Seventeen, a play that was adapted for the big screen by Alfred Hitchcock. I also remembered, alas, that despite its cracking start the book had eventually seemed to go on for far longer than it should. Un libro ambientado durante una celebración, fiesta, vacaciones (Pascua, Navidad, San Valentín, Halloween, etc. It is largely the disappointment of not quite delivering on the potential of the premise that makes Mystery in White less than a complete success.

Yes, at times the dialogue is a little corny, and some of the happenings a bit predictable but still so much fun and I just loved this trip to the past. A psychologist with a unique ability, Cora's rare gift allows her to sense emotions attached to discarded objects. As one of the protagonists states at the end, 'Well, anyhow, we've been through hell, and it was Christmas, so if one or two of us did get a bit funny, well, who could blame anyone?Cut off in the snow, with no way of making contact with anyone, the group have to make the best of things – while feeling more than a little uncomfortable about making themselves at home.

Fires roar enticingly in the hearth, but a kitchen knife lies on the floor and a pot of water for tea has boiled dry on the stove. On Christmas Eve, passengers on a snowbound train disembark and in this instance, take refuge in a country house. The prose was pretty good and it was nicely atmospheric, but I never got completely engaged with the plot or the characters, so my first Farjeon was just an okay-ish read for me.

Sayers wrote that 'Jefferson Farjeon is quite unsurpassed for creepy skill in mysterious adventures'.
