I didn't realise that Adrian Newey had been a race engineer for quite some time, in my ignorance I thought he was 'just' the leading aerodynamicist who had brought Red Bull their run of championships overcoming the handicap of not having the best drivers nor the best engines. You can find out more information about how The Race Media Ltd looks after your personal data in its privacy policy which you can find at privacy policy. I wasn't expecting great revelations of personal and working relationships - the author seems to be very much a self-contained engineer rather than a people person - but I thought he struck the right balance when talking about 'characters' he encountered along the way; just enough titillation to whet the appetite but no huge hatchet-jobs. Most F1 fans would assume that being an engineer Adrian would have had a stellar academic upbringing, so the early chapters where he traces his early youth, schooling difficulties and passion for motorbikes are eye openers. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies; most notably Ayrton Senna's death during his time at Williams in 1994.

Pretty much everything is there, apart from the camber/tyre issues at Spa, but otherwise a fantastic read – especially around the exhaust blowing development and Renault’s involvement (something they never got enough credit for imho).Next day I saw Gerhard Berger, who walked the track with me offering further advice – all of which meant that I’d had pointers from not one but two Monaco winners. Ao meu ver, as partes mais interessantes são quando Adrian está contando causos aleatórios do paddock e de corridas, sem tanto foco em descrições técnicas. But one striking aspect of his autobiography is how two of F1’s other great teams, had and blew their chances to hold onto F1’s star designer. A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrians thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. Well I personally loved this book; read in one (day's) sitting - I'm so sociable over the Christmas period.

It spans from his earliest childhood memories to his current Formula One career with Redbull Racing / Redbull Advanced Technologies; charting both personal and professional insights with his likeable, firm but fair style. Beautifully illustrated with never-before-seen drawings, How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrians remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed. When he began designing racing cars the regulations were loose and the safety limitations of some designs were obvious.Little wonder the finer details of an airbox configuration might have escaped his attention back then.

I photographed him in the museum at Pegasus Bridge in the early 2000s; and he had quite obviously found a cure for aging too, since he looked pretty much as he did in the late 70s. It explores Adrian Newey’s career through the spectrum of the cars that he designed, the races in which he has been involved, and the drivers he has worked alongside. This hardcover book is made up of 77 short chapters but in reality is structured into 11 main sections covering the major race cars that have defined Newey’s career timeline: March 83G and 86C Indycar, Leyton House 881, Williams FW14, FW16, FW18, McLaren MP4/13, MP4/20 and Red Bull RB5, RB6 and RB8. It was packed full of previously unknown facts, both technical and personal, and a smidge of juicy gossip too.
