But it was the next expression that struck her hardest: his cheeks darkened with shame and his eyes shifted away from her in an unmistakable look of guilt. Edge of Eternity is the sweeping, passionate conclusion to Ken Follett’s extraordinary historical epic, The Century Trilogy.

It's amazing how Follett has written the story straight to history and how families from several countries bond through century. She remembered their wedding day, the honeymoon, and their year of marriage, seeing it all now as a play in which Hans had been performing. Moreover, there is no mention of the Afghanistan front of the Cold War, which eventually led to the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the root cause of many problems we see in the Middle East today. With the hand of a master, he brings us into a world we thought we knew but now will never seem the same again. Dmitri has a sister, Tanya, a journalist struggling to expose problems within the Soviet government.Kennedy's Justice Department and finds himself in the middle of not only the seminal events of the civil rights battle but a much more personal battle of his own. According to Publisher's Weekly, Edge of Eternity is "the mesmerizing final installment in an exhaustive but rewarding reading experience dense in thematic heft, yet flowing with spicy, expertly paced melodrama, character-rich exploits, familial histrionics, and international intrigue.

Along with the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King and the Empire Trilogy by Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts. The book was like reading a movie ( I mean that in a good way), story flowed, the characters flowed, it just worked. So although they're interesting from a historical point of view, from a seat-of-the-pants action point of view, they don't match up. Several of them—notably George Jakes, Rebecca Held and Dimka Dvorkin—find themselves in positions of political power and influence near, but not at, the top of their countries’ governments across several decades. Once again there is an interest of the world politics and how incidents and decisions impact us all. I had felt sure that would happen with the (SPOLER ALERT) intravenous heroin use and gay characters – again, it would have shown something very interesting about the latter fifth of the century – again echoing aspects of the problems faced by homosexual characters throughout the trilogy and linking with gay rights, a change in society and attitudes that were so different one hundred years ago.

From Washington, DC, Jakes experiences the Cuban Missile Crisis and the fallouts from both the JFK assassination and later the assassination of his boss, Robert Kennedy. The families experience these events differently, and he is able to present events from each of their perspectives. The book ends with an epilogue set on November 4, 2008, the night of Barack Obama's election to President of the United States. The rest seemed like he was in a hurry to finish, and is rushed and padded with a lot of clumsy sex.I realize that this novel is classified as “historical fiction,” but it should be labeled as a “re-imagining. Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some official and unofficial espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is a much more dangerous place than he'd imagined. For the Americans, the issue of civil rights is the thorn in their side, while for the Communists, it is freedom and dissent. I can honestly say that I have never felt as sad to have finished a story as I have when I cane to the end, not just of Edge of Eternity, but the end of the Century Trilogy.

Follett's undertaking of the political crises of the next 3 decades, steered ahead by the superpowers of the world, range from Communism, Social Democracy, freedom and civil rights, the threat of nuclear annihilation, espionage and government corruption, weaving them with creativity, astute interpretation and insight. Every incident was drawn from what could have been a pleasant story into a long, over-detailed story. This is the third of the Century trilogy and again Ken Follett has provided us with an interesting thoughtful and easy to read account of this stage in history - this book covering the Cold War period and the many social issues therein. The boys greeted her politely, but she felt their yearning adolescent eyes on her figure as she splashed through the puddles in the school yard. Upon learning this, Rebecca sneaks across the wall with Bernd Held, a coworker at school whom she later marries.
