What with crocodiles, great whites and snakes in Perth, I prefer to stay here. It was suggested he tried surfing in Perth. He said what about the sharks? 'Oh don't worry about them'. What also counts significantly is if there are comparisons of (muggle) non-IS binoculars against IS. At a given mag and objective, there is a huge increase in seeing detail against handheld non-IS.So that's part of the doubt, the fear of getting the 15x50 and not gaining enough of a difference, but on the other hand, the fear of getting the 18x50 and end up overshooting with a device that is too specialized and of limited use. For most users, especially those who don't wear glasses this will not at all be an issue as the level of eye-relief will be perfect. Mirrorless System Lenses Canon RF Lenses Fujifilm X Mount Lenses Nikon Z Lenses Sony E Mount Lenses Sony G Master Lenses L Mount Lenses Micro Four Thirds Lenses Canon EF-M Lenses The Celestron Outland X monocular comes with a robust and sturdy casing to protect its optics. It uses BAK-4 glass prisms and multi-coated optics that minimize reflections, resulting in clearer views. It also provides plenty of eye relief, ensuring comfort for those who wear glasses. For those who wear glasses, the twist-up eyecups provide excellent eye relief, and for added comfort, there's even a comfortable ridge on top of the smooth exterior focuser where your thumb naturally wants to rest.

At 15x magnification, believe it or not these are not even the most powerful in the range (Canon also make a 18x50 IS binocular), but is still way more power than you could seriously use on a binocular without IS without the need for a tripod. Designed for the space conscious outdoor enthusiast and bird watcher, the new Barr & Stroud Sprite Plus 15x50 monocular represents an outstanding combination of performance and value. The Barr & Stroud Sprite Plus is waterproof and features rugged armoured construction. Designed for convenient single-handed use. All Sprite Plus monoculars feature BaK-4 prisms and fully multi-coated lenses for excellent optical performance, and in addition, the prisms are Phase Coated for enhanced contrast and light transmission. I use my muggle and IS bins like manual 'zooms'. I use low mag muggles to look around, if I see something of interest, I go up the IS mags ( X10, x12, x15, x18), until I see the level of detail I want. If that's still deficient, then I use spotting scopes, 65mm, 80mm, 100mm (x67), 125mm SCT.With its heads-up reticle display, there is no question that the Vortex Recce Pro HD monocular has been designed with hunters and hunting in mind, indeed I have it listed as the Best Monocular For Hunting for this year, however, I do feel that it is far more versatile than this: Vortex Recon R/T 15x50 monocularThough quite expensive, it provides an impressive 15x magnification, allowing you to see objects much closer than regular astronomy binoculars or monoculars. With its multi-coated extra-low dispersion glass, you can expect detailed and high-resolution images at long distances.★★★★

Another downside to the powerful 15x magnification is that this very "zoomed in" image also results in a much narrower field of view. So I called Canon, and was told my concern would be forwarded to an engineer. I got this reply: "I consulted one of our engineers regarding your inquiry. He advised since the Canon Factory Service Center determined the binoculars are working within specifications, the chromatic aberration would be considered normal operation." Designed for comfortable operation over long periods of use, even when wearing sunglasses or prescription glasses, thanks to adjustable eyepieces with 15.0mm long eye relief that minimises ‘tunnel effect’. read less

Vortex has opted to use a simple fold-down rubber eye-cup with a side shield shape on the Recon monocular which is an interesting option. shake is definitely apparent, I think close to a 10x muggle binocular. Which is still very impressive given the magnification involved - but I think 18x stretches the limits of Canon's tech. I was recently at an Australian astro gathering with a number of experienced ATM's and observers - and they were very impressed by the views of the milky way it provided. There were numerous scopes of different sizes around and they preferred the binos.
