About this deal

In this special time of the year however when night blurs into days and nothing is quite as it seems and with the detective caught up in his relationship with Fran Hunter, his judgement might just be clouded. Will the detective think clearly enough to uncover the truth or will his relationship be what comes between him and his work? However, after returning young Marilyn to her home in Headland, it is clear that her mother is safe and well. The real plot begins a few months later, when Inspector Ramsey has forgotten all about the incident, when Marilyn’s mother goes missing for real. It is then that he is forced to investigate the strange goings on in the coastal town of Headland. Cleeves uses her unique style of writing once again to bring the readers into this twisted yet charming novel. Vera

The Raging Storm is the new mystery novel by award-winning author Ann Cleeves, out now in the both the UK and the US. Matthew Venn must unravel a third case, set in a remote fishing village in the area of North Devon where he - and Ann - grew up. Taking inspiration from the novel, Wild Fire is a balanced London Dry Gin with juniper and sweet spice notes that have a lingering and warming finish. Tasted neat, there are notes of warming cinnamon and sweet orange that linger on the palate. The long finish has an aromatic spice with a touch of heat from dried red chillies. Wild Fire pairs beautifully with premium tonic, which softens the heat from the spices and lifts the sweet citrus notes of the sorrel and orange peel. It is best enjoyed with a slice of orange and a copy of Ann Cleeves's Wild Fire. One of the most successful book series that Ann Cleeves has written are the Inspector Ramsey books. This six part series was released throughout the 1990s and is now become so successful that copies of the books have become collector’s items. This series is a perfect example of how Ann’s surroundings affected her work as they are set mainly in her then home, Northumberland. Vera Stanhope is a police inspector in the City Police Department of northern England. She’s witty and brave, but she’s got a bad temper — and a lot of cases on her plate. Vera’s adventures became an instant classic upon publication and were adapted into a TV series starring Brenda Blethyn. The series currently features ten novels. Shetland Island seriesThe Vera Stanhope series by Ann Cleeves is a set of detective novels following the life and cases of Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. Stanhope has made it her mission to deal with some of the most difficult crimes in Northumberland. Shetland Island is a series of six primary works span by well known Britain’s Duncan Lawrie Dagger award winning author Ann Cleeves. As the name suggests the basic setting is the Shetland Island with the story centered on the life of Inspector Jimmy Perez. As far as mystery stories go, this series definitely has readers hooked on its suspense. Each of the books has received praise for being able to keep readers intrigued. Good short stories have a force and a clarity which it’s almost impossible to achieve in a novel,” she explains. A visit to her local prison brings DI Vera Stanhope face to face with an old enemy: Former detective superintendent, and now inmate, John Brace. Brace was convicted of corruption and involvement in the death of a gamekeeper – and Vera played a part in his downfall.

But the investigation is too tempting and she’s never been one to follow the rules. Working with Sergeant Joe Ashworth, she starts the hunt for a murderer who is artistic as well as deadly. The stories center around an unlikely heroine, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope, who has a famously short temper and no time for pleasantries. Her ability to keep her readers intrigued and interested to learn more is what makes her so unique. Her writing abilities have been proven repeatedly since her first book, A Bird in the Hand, which was published in 1986.Since then, the Shetland Island books have become one of the author’s most popular series. They’ve been translated into multiple languages for a global audience and put these remote subarctic islands on the world stage.

When Jem Rosco - sailor, adventurer and local legend - blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. The residents think nothing of it when Rosco disappears again; that's the sort of man he is. Inspired by her late husband Tim and his love of all things avian, Cleeves completed book one while still living on the isolated island of Hilbre. Then, just days later, a second woman is murdered. Vera knows that to find the key to this new killing she needs to understand what was troubling Margaret so deeply before her death – before another life is lost. She can feel in her bones that there’s a link. Then an elderly woman is shot in a tragic accident in the middle of the night. Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called in by her grandson – his own colleague, Sandy Wilson. As well as her smash hit series, Cleeves has also published two bestselling standalone titles, which I’ve listed below. Ann: ‘The new series features Inspector Detective Matthew Venn but I hope it will be more of an ensemble piece so we find out a little bit more about his colleagues, Jen Rafferty, who’s a scouser who has escaped an abusive marriage and moved down to North Devon, and very much local boy Ross May. The protagonist, Inspector Ramsey made his debut appearance in the 1990 novel, A Lesson in Dying. This novel takes place in a small, uninteresting town. However this changes very dramatically when the Head Master of the local school is murdered. Throughout the novel, there are a lot of plot twists that make Inspector Ramsey’s mission to get to the truth even more exciting. The first is Vera, which is an adaptation of her Vera Stanhope series. This adaptation has been incredibly successful since beginning in 2011. There are 12 seasons so far, with the filming of a thirteenth season underway during the summer of 2023.

The hit TV crime drama takes as its point of departure the characters and settings of Ann Cleeves's award-winning series of novels, but has developed its own stories, and over time the two have diverged. As series 7 began, Douglas Henshall dropped a bombshell, announcing that this would be his last season as Jimmy Perez. He said "It's been one of the privileges of my career to play Jimmy Perez for almost 10 years and to work with so many wonderful people both in front of and behind the camera, and also to spend so much time in Shetland." The good news is that the show will carry on - but without Perez, series 8 will be even more different from the books.

Publication Order of Standalone Novels

The show has been broadcast around the globe, and six seasons in, it’s still something of a sensation. This popular series begins when a teenage girl's body is discovered near the home of a local outcast. Jimmy Perez investigates, and while suspicious initially falls on the outcast, the investigation soon turns into something no one expected. Another popular book series of hers, the Shetland Island books, also has a popular TV show adaptation: Shetland. It began in 2013 and was renewed for its eighth season in February 2023. The author has also written a short story, ‘Too Good to Be True,’ which follows on from book six, so I’ve included this in the list, too.
