Description

Tide information and sunrise/sunset times for about 3,300 locations around the world can easily be set using the dedicated app. The day of the week lives in the lower left corner, projected in the same font size as the date. The activation status of various functions (DST, BlueTooth, Alarm, Signal, etc) appear in very small fonts along the bottom of the screen and in the upper left corner.

While the first watch we compared is said to be the ideal type for those into extreme workout routines, the Casio GBX100 of the G-Lide collection was created particularly with surfing enthusiasts in mind. Design & Durability

Specifications

MIP (Memory In Pixel) LCD (improves display readability of standard functions like Tide Graph, Moon Data, high tide and low tide times, and sunrise and sunset times) By some distance, the Achilles heel of most smarter-than-average watches on the market is the battery life. Built for avid wave-riders, the new models — GBX-100NS-1ER and GBX-100NS-4ER — arrive equipped with the ability to display essential, real-time surfing data, including high tide and low tide times and levels. The watch arrives connected to a phone application that allows its wearer to select from one of approximately 3,300 locations around the globe for ocean information. However, a lot of what you do with the app is a one-time thing. Once you’ve set preferences, the world time, daily targets, and the tide graph, chances are you’ll leave the app alone, so its niggles don’t get frustrating. Remember, this is a hybrid watch, not a full touchscreen smartwatch, and you buy it more for the watch than for the app. Not a smartwatch, not only for surfers Notifications are reliable and accompanied by either a beep or a vibration, which can be specified in the menu. You do have to dig through various screens and push buttons way too many times to see more detail, but I rarely found the need to do this. I could get most of what I needed to know from the initial alert, then use my phone. You can’t interact with messages anyway.

Like its brothers in arms, the GBX-100 has multiple functional displays that take full advantage of the the high-resolution display. Also provides comfort with a soft urethane band with slits that help with fit and allow water and sweat to escape.Training Function: Display of distance, speed, pace, and other calculated values based on accelerometer, auto/manual lap times, Auto Pause, target alert setting (time, calories burned) on/off, training display customization Like all Casio models, the watch is powered by a Japanese quartz movement, delivering an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month. All of the G-Move data can also be conveniently viewed on your smartphone, using the Mobile link function that connects the watch with your phone via Bluetooth.

The reason is simple: at a very similar cost, you get quite a few more features that are both interesting and practical, especially if you’re into surfing. And while the design is very similar, we think the stainless steel bezel gives GBX 100 an edge in terms of aesthetics.

Manual

No surprises here – just like its sibling, the GBX 100 is powered by a Japanese quartz movement that runs on a CR2032 battery. The accuracy of this caliber is +/- 15 seconds per month, although again it’s flawless when connected to your phone. Battery Step count (A built-in 3-axis acceleration sensor begins counting steps the moment you start to walk.) The battery life is once again outstanding and it can last up to 2 years. Casio GBX 100 vs GBD 200 (Verdict) Training Function (Display of distance, speed, pace, and other calculated values based on accelerometer, auto/manual lap times, Auto Pause, target alert setting (time, calories burned) on/off, training display customization (elapsed time, distance, pace, lap time, lap distance, lap pace, average pace, speed, average speed, calories burned)) Revealed at Casio’s Spring & Summer New Product Exhibition, the GBX-100 is a surfing-oriented watch with Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, high/low tide times, tide levels, and sunrise/sunset times, along with the traditional tide graph and moon age display.

The high-definition MIP LCD also improves visibility. Its ability to display tide graphs, moon data, high tide/low tide times and levels, and sunrise/sunset times is useful for surfers as it enables them to understand the tide situation in detail at a glance, which pairs well with the training measurement functions. In terms of the screen, GBX 100 uses the same MIP display as its predecessor. So, you can expect the same high level of contrast and clarity in both bright sunlight and complete darkness. Also the quality of the glass is equal – both models feature mineral crystal glass. The watch measures 50.9 x 46.0 x 14.7 millimeters and weighs 66 grams, which is somewhere between the size of a DW-5600 (48.9 x 42.8 x 13.4) and GX-56 (55.5 × 53.6 × 17.5), but lighter than the GX-56’s 88 grams. It’s a smartwatch Jim, but not as we know it. To read a text from my son required six button pushes. No matter how many times I pressed the buttons I couldn’t reply. After half a day of being more connected to my phone than I wanted to be, I turned off the notifications.

Is the GBX-100NS not being a smartwatch and not really only for its ideal target audience a downside? Not at all, it’s a good thing. The G-LIDE GBX-100NS takes everything I liked about the GBD-200 and puts it into what I think is a better-looking case, that’s less sporty than the previous models. Andy Boxall/Digital Trends
