It's almost startling to see the difference in appearance of Jill Gascoine this time round. Gone is the mid-length hair and the natural Seventies look replaced by the shorter do she was sporting at this time (coming some time after The Gentle Touch's afro, I assume this 1987 appearance coincided with her final outing as Maggie Forbes in the final series of C.A.T.S. Eyes).

Celebrities trying very hard to remain reputable by not using rude parts of the body in their mime. BFI | Film & TV Database | GIVE US A CLUE[15/09/80] (1980)". Give Us A Clue was a British televised game show, presented by Michael Aspel, running from 1979 to 1984, when the show changed presenters.Being an upbeat show of a certain vintage, featuring “real” personalities, there are occasionally attitudes and language that reflect the time. There are also some visual moments, aside from some of the fashion, that may make some modern audiences uncomfortable. Some episodes have more of these incidences than others. The odd comment or clunky clue, in this writer’s opinion, isn’t enough to detract from the enjoyment of the show. I believe that if you bear context in mind, this show is a delightful experience. There are a number of set gestures which can be used, such as book, television, film, but the rest are totally open to interpretation which leads to a large amount of hilarity as you can well imagine. Throw in a pretty haphazard scoring system and chaos is bound to ensue.

Full of bold characters and strange stories, 'In Perfect Harmony' might start out Middle of the Road but it takes audacious left turns all the way." Watching some more episodes I've found myself thinking there's also less rehearsal time for the daytime version. Many of the newer players seem far less au fait with some of the shorthands than one would expect, often mixing them up to the point of confusion. Someone called Billy Pearce (a stand up comic, Wikipedia informs me) used the "similar to" interwoven fist wiggle sign on two different occasions, once to indicate both a word that sounded similar to the one in question, and another time for a correct syllable that needed lengthening. If what 321 studios claim is true, then they actually "play" the video with some sort of software DVD player -- which would IMPLY they would have had to license from the DVD forum a decryption key. Somehow, I doubt this is the case, and even if they did, I'm 100% sure what they are doing would be in breach of that license... There are some strong individual singing performances, especially from the impressive Lyn Paul as Jessie, who explores her own anxieties as an older woman faced with undressing for such a noble and worthy cause.“ ( Tony Clarke, Stagetalk Magazine, 27th September 2023)

After that, there was the glorious theme tune of the Parky version, composed by Thames TV's Musical Director Alan Braden. It incorporated the entire Ring Cycle and also a catchy show-tune sing-a-long as the team captains (including, inevitably, Lionel Blair) introduced each of their team members in turn. Courtesy of TV Cream, here's the lyrics: A revived version was broadcast by BBC One in 1997 over 30 episodes, hosted by Tim Clark. Teams were captained by Christopher Blake and Julie Peasgood and the show introduced a lateral thinking puzzle (which the host could "give clues to"). Give Us a Clue returned for a special Comic Relief episode in March 2011 with Sara Cox, Christopher Biggins, Lionel Blair, Una Stubbs, Holly Walsh, Jenni Falconer and David Walliams. The first six series of Give Us a Clue have been released on DVD by Network, but only 98 out of the first 106 episodes were included. The eight episodes that are not in the collection had appearances of three celebrities with sexual abuse offences that were investigated in Operation Yewtree.

This rectifies two imbalances in the earlier format. Firstly, each member of the team gets the same amount of turns on the floor. The previous format meant that those furthest away from the captains usually only had one go, while the higher-billed celebs nearer the captain had two. Secondly, the teams now alternate between getting the first go, whereas previously the women always went first.

On paper, Give Us A Clue looks like an unusual prospect for a release on DVD. British TV panel games aren’t usually prime candidates for physical media, as they’re a little bit like a newspaper; Viewed once then discarded forever. This show had a second life in repeats, but that ended a long time ago. Once one begins to dive into this massive set compiled by Network, known for their releases of the similar situated Indoor League, the reasons for the release become clearer. On Easter Sunday (9th April 2023) Boom Radio broadcast an interview with Lyn Paul, recorded with Phil Riley on Yesterday is a cancelled cheque; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have - so spend it wisely. Elizabeth Taylor in London/Sophia Loren in Rome and New Captain Scarlet: The Complete Series have previously been released on Blu-ray by Network. The more modern BBC re-make with Tim Clark tried to introduce a lateral thinking puzzle (which he could "give clues to") but it didn't really fit in with the rest of the show. Regardless of whoever the host was, cheating and favouritism by the host towards the women's team abounded. BFI | Film & TV Database | GIVE US A CLUE[21/01/80] (1980)".
