In the Cozy Living Group, several members have shown off a small kitchen area dedicated to their love of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Hygge is an overall feeling, so it’s important to add elements that soothe all of your senses – not just sight. Adding a chunky knitted blanket, or a faux fur throw pillow can add dimension and interesting elements to your space. Because of this, investing in a high-quality mattress and soft and cozy bedding is never a bad idea. Indulge in Egyptian Cotton or Satin bed sheets, and top them off with a warm duvet and a chunky knit blanket, and treat yourself to a silk pillowcase ( they’re good for your hair!). Instead of living your life on autopilot, the Danish concept of hygge is a way of life that brings deep contentment to your soul. Add a small side table with a lamp and tray filled with a few of your favorite things for a cozy winter evening.

Now more than ever before, our homes need to be a place of comfort, a place to feel safe when we shut the door. Our homes are where we can truly be ourselves, unwind, and create special memories with our family and friends. Inspired by Danish design and traditions, Meik Wiking’s beautiful book My Hygge Home shows us how to turn our home into a cozy sanctuary and live a bit like the happiest people in the world—the Danes. The urge to nest and control our close environments has never been stronger. We spend more time in our homes than anywhere else—but the way in which our homes impact how we feel has remained relatively unexplored until now.

Into The Wild...

Ideas like using schoolhouse lights in your kitchen can provide light for tasks or ambiance when you have them on a dimmer switch. Hanging vintage lanterns from your front porch can create a magical setting to relax and enjoy the evening air. One of my favorite hygge home lighting tips is to have a small light hanging over important pictures or paintings in your rooms to showcase their style.

I have an old breadboard on my side table that serves as my tray. A large soy candle, antique silver serving pieces with succulents inside, a miniature picture of my grandfather, and a book all share the spotlight on my side table. Spas use blue and green colors on their walls because they know these soothing colors calm the mind. If you have your own outdoor space, there are some easy things you can do to make it your own peaceful retreat. My lamp is a pale blue tall toleware lamp from Italy that I recently found in an antique store. It is simple and yet stunning at the same time. Adding vintage thrifted elements or heirlooms from your own family’s collection is an easy way to not only add personality to your space, but it also can be a way to bring in those cherished antiques that make you smile when you see them.My Hygge Home: How to Make Home Your Happy Place" is a delightful journey into the heart of contentment and warmth. Authored with a gentle touch, this book is not merely a guide but a comforting companion, revealing the secrets to transforming any space into a haven of happiness. After reading the book, I used some tips to finish up the rest of my balcony space in my condo. I love a YouTube channel with a host that actually lives in Denmark and talks about the Danish culture. You can find it here. Creating a Cozy Life Group

Blankets and throws are a must in any hygge home. Snuggling under the covers on the couch, in your favorite chair, or bed is one of life’s greatest pleasures when there’s a chill in the air.One common aspect of hygge design is the lean towards earthier tones and concepts. One way you can incorporate this easily is by bringing nature inside. If you own your home or have the ability to renovate your space, you can bring in natural wood floors or construct a stone fireplace. The Danish adopted the word as their own, and they embody the hygge lifestyle. Danes are among the happiest people in the world, and they attribute their happiness in part to hygge. Danish homes are part of that lifestyle. Bring those elements in your own home. Consider how much time you spend in different locations and how the design and décor of those places impacts on your behaviour. I think there are still good opportunities to make a rented house a happy home. Of course, you may not be able to move a wall or even paint walls, but you can still decorate with pictures or plants. I’m looking for the perfect curtains to switch them out within the winter months. I want curtains that look a little heavier, like velvet. It might take me years to find the right pair, but I’m ok with that because decorating a hygge home is a process.
