Foreign Office Minister of State responsible for the polar regions, Lord Goldsmith, gave a keynote speech to launch the UK's new Arctic policy framework: The Arctic is, first and foremost, a home to the people that live there. But climate change poses an existential threat to the Arctic as we know it, and to all who rely on its ecosystems and biodiversity.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 changed the context for UK-Russia cooperation on Arctic issues. As part of the response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UK suspended existing government-to-government engagement, including through our science and innovation network team in Russia and their collaborative research projects. As such, collaboration on Arctic issues remains limited to only essential work as appropriate and necessary, subject to further review. Non-Arctic states The Iveagh Guardis make a neat and natural pair, one framed at the left by the side wall of the Palazzo Civran and the other, the present painting, framed at the right by the (now destroyed) Palazzo Bembo. Guardi seems to have considered the pairing a success as the later Gulbenkian canvas was also conceived as a pendant to a similar view of Rialto from the north (also 52 by 84cm; sold in the Greve sale, Berlin, Lepke, 12-13 October, 1909). However, another version of the Iveagh pendant, of very similar dimensions to the Gulbenkian painting (53 by 85 cm; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) 9 has been traditionally paired with A view of the church of Santa Maria della Salute. 10 The Metropolitan canvas is identical to the Iveagh pendant in its arrangement of staffage but, like the Gulbenkian painting which is cropped at the left, so it is cropped at the right, omitting the Fabbriche Nuove. Morassi considered the Metropolitan version to be a slightly later reduced replica of the Iveagh painting, describing it eloquently with words that might equally apply to the present work instead: "a beautiful painting for its vivid light, transparency, clarity of handling". 11On November evenings, the Andromeda Galaxy is positioned very high in the eastern sky. The lower two storeys date from the twelfth or thirteenth century, though the building was remodelled many times, and it appears from the scaffolding on the roof that the fourth floor may have been in the course of construction when Canaletto made his painting. And we know that warming temperatures have profound implications for the people who live in the Arctic, for biodiversity, and for the whole world.
The important group of figures on the right, some seen from behind with swirling cloaks, are also largely beautifully intact, with the architectural detail strong up the right side of the painting. The more shadowy buildings on the far side of the water have naturally proved more vulnerable: the increasing transparency of the paint over time has led to some sinking, with fine detail sometimes blurred, and the characteristically subtle reflections from the water on the facades faint. There is a superficial splatter of little white splashes across the upper facades at centre left. Browns are especially M. A significant number of UK based researchers visit Greenland to conduct Arctic science and humanities research (such as for the Iceland-Greenland Seas project (2016-2020)). Several UK research institutions enjoy academic collaborations with scientific institutions in all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark, including the Greenland Climate Research Centre, to increase our understanding of the Arctic climate. To further enhance our cooperation, the UK recently launched a research bursary programme (2023-2024) to support joint research projects in Greenland. The programme will enable new collaborations between both research communities across Arctic science disciplines, and provide access to fieldwork, infrastructure and data sets, while empowering Indigenous communities as researchers and delivery partners. Over the month, Saturn's brightness will diminish a little from magnitude 0.7 to 0.85. Viewed in a telescope during November Saturn will show an apparent disk diameter of 17.4 arc-seconds, and its rings will span nearly 41 arc-seconds. We look forward to further close cooperation with Sweden, bilaterally and multilaterally, on key areas of Arctic interest. United States of America
The pendant to the present work, View of the Rialto Bridge with the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, is the only signed painting of these four. While the UK is not an Arctic state, it is directly affected by changes in the region as its nearest neighbour with much shared biodiversity. The Arctic is warming at 4 times the global average, increasing the risk of extreme weather, flooding and environmental degradation. Despite the vicissitudes of time and past interventions, the expressive impact of this view of the Rialto, the throbbing heart of Venice, remains immediate and powerful. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 fundamentally undermined the peaceful cooperation that had characterised the Arctic Council since its inception. The UK strongly supported the decision of the seven other Arctic States to pause their engagement with the Russian Chairmanship in March 2022, pending consideration of how to continue the Council’s important work. The UK also welcomed their decision in June 2022 to implement a limited resumption in their work in the Arctic Council, in projects that do not involve the participation of the Russian Federation. We will continue to engage with our Arctic partners and Allies to contribute to ongoing critical work, and we stand ready to recommence participation in multilateral cooperation across the Arctic region when appropriate.

II, fig. 510; This remarkable painting is a masterpiece by Francesco Guardi, impressive not only for its imposing dimensions but also for its extraordinary pictorial quality. In terms of its importance within the oeuvre of the painter, it ranks alongside three other works, all painted at around the same time, which together constitute the pinnacle of Guardi's output as a painter of vedute; one of these was, until recently, in the same ownership (fig. 1), one is now destroyed and the other is in a private collection. 1
