As air power expanded during World War II, Gremlin stories were favorites among R. A. F. pilots. One such young flier was Roald Dahl, a Welsh-born flight lieutenant with a prolific imagination and keen writing ability. Dahl flew in combat and suffered injuries after a crash landing in the deserts of North Africa. He was later posted to Washington, D.C. as an assistant air attaché for the British Embassy. It was Welker who suggested Mandel perform in Gremlins. The puppets' lines were mostly invented by the voice actors, based on cues from the physical actions of the puppets, which were filmed before the voice work. When developing the voice for Gizmo, Mandel explained, "[Gizmo was] cute and naive, so, you know, I got in touch with that... An early reference to the gremlin is in aviator Pauline Gower's 1938 novel The ATA: Women with Wings, where Scotland is described as "gremlin country", a mystical and rugged territory where scissor-wielding gremlins cut the wires of biplanes when unsuspecting pilots were about. At the time Dahl was serving in Washington, D.C. as an assistant air attaché with the Royal Air Force (RAF), to help create a kind of British propaganda to keep America interested in, and sympathetic to, Britain’s war efforts. Dahl had written about his RAF experiences, including a story called “Gremlin Lore” about the mythical creatures that “sabotaged” RAF planes. Since he was a serving officer, Dahl was required to submit everything he wrote for approval by British Information Services. The officer who read it, Sidney Bernstein, passed it along to Walt Disney, who was looking for War–related stories to develop as films.The same year that Someone Like You was published, Dahl married film actress Patricia Neal, who won an Academy Award for her role in Hud in 1961. The marriage lasted three decades and resulted in five children, one of whom tragically died in 1962.
