About this deal

MAXIMUM HEAT OUTPUT – Choose from 2 heat settings for complete flexibility during cold spells and winter months – 750W for low heat and 1500W for high heat. This model looks wonderfully retro with its Scandinavian wood-effect details and old-fashioned FM radio-style shell. In fact, it looks better in the flesh than it does in photos.

At 76.4cm in height, the Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is quite a lot shorter than Dyson’s standard tower fans. Nevertheless, it still enjoys the attractive design for which Dyson products are well known. Aside from these minor design foibles, the Capsule Fit heater performs exceptionally well. It comes with two simple controls: a thermostat dial and another for its three heat settings (up to an impressive 2.4kW). The highest heat setting also increases the fan’s speed for extra reach. You can take out the middle shelf entirely, which will allow you to fit in full-height bottles, such as the bottle of wine. Russell Hobbs says that it will hold two 1.5-litre bottles. This is a bit awkward, as it means you need to reach behind the fan to adjust the settings, and seeing as it's intended to be used as a desk fan, that means that when you’re sat at a desk you need to stand up to operate the controls.Using Dyson’s unique Air Multiplier technology combined with variable oscillation up to an impressive 350 degrees, the Hot+Cool delivers a good wallop of warmth. According to the company, this heater will provide full coverage in rooms up to 81m³. As well as a built-in thermostat, air flow can be altered using the included magnetic remote control or, if you prefer, via Dyson’s excellent app. There are three speed settings – low, medium, and high – and then a toggle that you push in to make the fan oscillate left and right through 90 degrees, and pull out for static, directional airflow. There’s no doubt the Dyson Hot+Cool is expensive, but for your spend you’re getting the best of three worlds: heating in the winter, cooling in the summer and arguably the best air filtration system in the business.

A lot of mini-coolers look a bit naff, but Russell Hobbs has done a great job with this appliance. Available in white or grey, both models feature wood-effect handles on the doors. I’m reviewing the larger 14-litre model here, but this mini-cooler is also available in a smaller 4-litre unit. In both cases, Russell Hobbs recommends that you leave the cooler for four hours to achieve the right temperature before putting anything into it, so you’ll need to plan ahead. PerformanceThen you slot on the rear grill and secure it with the nut you’ve just loosened. Next, it’s the fan blades and then the fan blade securing cap. Followed by attaching the fan cover. Annoyingly this needs a screwdriver to undo and then refasten the small screw at the bottom of the grill plate, and no tools or allen keys are provided in the box. The need for a screwdriver also isn't mentioned on the box or in the assembly instructions, which is a little frustrating. This retro heater is easy to use and features 2 power settings (750W and 1500W), an adjustable thermostat and fan only setting, making it ideal for use all year round. Second, compressors that use refrigerant are more efficient than the thermoelectric system used in the Russell Hobbs Scandi. Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde purifying fan heater: Best fan heater-cum-air purifier for discerning stylistas

This model comes with a basic remote control that allows you to adjust oscillation, power settings and room temperature and set an eight-hour timer. You can also control its most basic settings using the large digital display. The VonHaus comes with two power outputs (1kW and 2kW), a single fan speed and a digitally controlled room temperature thermostat for accurate operation. When it comes to air purification, this Dyson can filter down to 0.1 microns, which includes pollen, pet dander, bacteria, smoke, benzene, nitrogen dioxide and, in the case of this specific model, formaldehyde – a poisonous gas emitted by cigarette smoke, many household products and wooden flooring. In other words, this model doesn’t just heat – or cool – the air in your room, it cleans it too at a rate of up to 290 litres per second. You don’t get many onboard controls on this sleek cylindrical ceramic heater; but, then again, it’s designed to work via an Apple or Android app, which lets you set your preferred room temperature and even set a schedule to turn it on and off over the course of a week. Grab the lever on the front and the door swings open level with the cooler to reveal the inside. The compartment is spacious, with room for 14 330ml drinks, spread over the top and bottom shelves.

Despite the lower-quality build, we were impressed by this heater’s performance. It’s very keenly priced, too. On average, the cooler’s internal temperature was 7.4ºC, although it hit a peak of 11.9ºC and a minimum of 4.4ºC. This temperature range is fine for cold drinks. Other than that, the settings are limited, and a little awkward to use, but if, like me, you're not a fan of temperamental touch screens or app connectivity, then its manual operation may be another plus point. This product comes with a free one year manufacturer guarantee. A free second year guarantee is available upon registering your product.

Build quality is excellent, it looks attractive and its compact size (it’s just 28.5cm wide and 16cm in height) means it won’t get in the way. It’s just the job for heating up a space without fuss. At this price, I expected the fan to be fairly noisy, and it is, especially on the medium and high speed settings. But whilst it definitely can't give the Duux Whisper Flex Smart Fan or MeacoFan 1056 Air Circulator a run for their money in the quiet stakes, it is still a lot quieter than the budget Honeywell Turbo Force Power Air Circulator Fan, and it's half the price and certainly looks far more stylish. The air it delivers certainly isn't as cold as the powerful MeacoFan 1056 Air Circulator can deliver, but it does make a difference when you're feeling hot and bothered. ADDED SAFETY FEATURES – This fan heater features overheat protection for added safety, which ensures your heater will automatically switch off if it gets too hot. The controls aren’t very ergonomic or nice to the touch; they feel pretty basic. And the corrugated edges of the speed button in particular are quite uncomfortable to hold and left some big indents in the thumb after twisting through the settings. But, the controls are manual and don't involve any clever (faffy) touch screens or tiny (easily lost) remote controls to be operated, and they produce a good stream of air that has a cooling effect on a hot day. Screwdriver found, and the screw undone and refitted, you then remove the base plate securing nut from the standing pole, thread the standing pole through the base plate, and refasten the securing nut.

While today’s fan heaters are pretty energy-efficient, they’re not suitable for leaving on for hours on end; they still consume a lot of electricity compared to, say, standalone oil-filled heaters. In fact, most of the models in this guide will cost between 35p and 70p per hour to run, possibly more given the current high electricity prices. Unlike most fan heaters that blow out hot air from a front grill, here it is blasted out through the top of the unit in a 360-degree pattern. At just 30cm in height and 22cm wide, the Duux Threesixty 2 is unobtrusive – in fact, some may mistake it for a small waste paper bin. Sure, it’s cheaper to run than a large fridge freezer, but the two products aren’t directly comparable. With the Russell Hobbs Scandi Portable Mini Cooler & Warmer you’re getting a smaller, neater chiller that’s great for parties, general soft drink storage or even make-up, and you can take it anywhere you want. Safety features include overheat and tip-over protection. You’ll become aware of the latter the minute you take the heater out the box, because it feels like something is loose inside. Don’t panic, it’s part of the design.
