About this deal

Death’s first mini-series began the same month as The Sandman (1989) #47 and told the story of the one day of the century where she walked among mortals. Seasons of Mist: Dream goes to hell to retrieve Nada's soul but doesn't find what he's looking for... The first season covers Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll’s House, and Dream Country, aka The Sandman #1-20. After Sandman, Delirium appears in The Little Endless Storybook (2001) OGN, Death: At Death’s Door (2003) OGN, Lucifer (2000) #52, The Vault of Michael Allred (2006) #2 & 4, Delirium’s Party: A Little Endless Storybook (2011) OGN

With a protagonist such as The Lord of Dream there are really no places you can't go. We bounce around through time and worlds and meet the good, the bad, the badder, and the ugly. Collects #51-69 and material from Vertigo Jam (1993) #1. (This straddles the third and fourth Absolutes, or trades Vol. 8-9.) The various supporting Sandman short story releases from 1995 to 2009 are collected in a fifth Absolute volume. Up until 2019, this volume was the only way to collect these stories in one place.

Special, & 27-34: Not collected; “Many Mansions.” The Special was released between #25-26, but fits between #26-27.

I had held off on reading this series for around a year or so, because I don't like to burn through all of the best reads all at once. It would be a fairly dispiriting endeavour if your reading followed a continual downward spiral until you were left with nothing but the dregs at the bottom of the barrel. That said, sometimes you just have to go for gold and creak out the big guns. So now that its all over, what do I really think about Sandman? Well, it was really good, but I don't think I hyper loved it as much as others. Here's why: In this epic tale, Delirium, youngest of the Endless, prevails upon the Sandman to help her find their errant brother, Destruction. But their quest will lead to a painful reunion between Morpheus and his son, Orpheus. Then, the Sandman and others are trapped in a mysterious inn while a tempest rages - and all they can do to while away the time is tell the stories of their lives. And when a young woman's baby is stolen, she turns to The Kindly Ones for vengeance - only to set off a series of events that will lead the Sandman to his ultimate fate, and the baby to find a destiny no one could have foretold. Delirium has never made an appearance outside of a Sandman comic or without Death save for in Lucifer (2000) #52.The Sandman is the universally lauded masterwork following Morpheus, Lord of the Dreaming--a vast hallucinatory landscape housing all the dreams of any and everyone who's ever existed. Regardless of cultures or historical eras, all dreamers visit Morpheus' realm--be they gods, demons, muses, mythical creatures, or simply humans who teach Morpheus some surprising lessons. The Sandman: Overture: In 1915, Dream of the Endless has found the errant nightmare called the Corinthian. But something pulls him away at the last moment. Something momentous is happening in the universe, darkness is forming, and Dream is called to an important meeting...of himself.

After Sandman, Despair appears in The Little Endless Storybook (2001) OGN SC, Death: At Death’s Door (2003) OGN, The Vault of Michael Allred (2006) #2 & 4, Delirium’s Party: and A Little Endless Storybook (2011) OGN Delirium of the Endless The Sandman (1989) #7, 21, 28, 47, 55-56, 59, 63, 67, 70-72, & Special, The Sandman: Overture (2013) #1-2 & 5, and The Sandman: Endless Nights. A word on Sandman collections and “recoloring.” The earliest issues of Sandman have been significantly digitally recolored in a manner more in keeping with modern colors – less impressionistic blues, greens, and purples, and more realistic colors and muddy shadows. The bad news is, all 2010 and later collected editions reflect these colors. The good news is, the change only affects the earliest issues, and the style of the colors still matches the original period – just not the actual color choices. These have become the defacto official colors as far as Gaiman and all of his collaborators are concerned.Starting in 2020, Audible has done two seasons adapting the classic comic as an audioplay with an all-star cast. The extended world of Sandman has a large crossover with the supporting cast of Hellblazer, and some of these series could be thought of as Hellblazer supporting series as well. See Guide to Hellblazer for more details. Morpheus very rarely has been written by anyone other than Gaiman, and always with Gaiman’s explicit approval. His full appearances are detailed below. Daniel Hall, The Dream King It's not a coincidence that we follow Dream. His realm is the world of dreams in all forms: Dreams while we sleep, but also ideas, creativity and wishes that shape life when we're awake. The influence of the imagined, the dreamed, the subconscious on our existence is the central theme in the series. And Gaiman is very clear: There is a reality, sure, but it is only one of many realms and by far not the most important. There are other realms, different dreams, individual ones like the adventure worlds kids have in their heads or the illusions of a madman, but also collective ones like tradition or religion that are as real as reality and far more influential. Therefore the stories also heavily reference literature, myths, religion and so on.

At the end of Gaiman’s run of Sandman, Daniel appears as a new version of Dream in #69-72 & 74. After that, he makes a finite amount of appearances in both the Vertigo and DC universes through the introduction of the renewed “Sandman Universe” in 2018. The rest of this book is absolutely amazing. The Death stories are great as always, the various other stories a good too. My personal favorite was The Dream Hunters. I'm not going to go on and write a massive review on each volume within the omnibus because I feel drained after reading such a mammoth sized book, but let me say this... So the story starts of with some men performing witchcraft and they wish to trap Death, so that they may live forever, instead they trap deaths' older brother 'Dream' or his real name Morpheus. He is imprisoned on the mortal plane for over 80 years and in that time he does not speak to them. The Sandman is the universally lauded masterwork following Morpheus, Lord of the Dreaming a vast hallucinatory landscape housing all the dreams of any and everyone who's ever existed. Regardless of cultures or historical eras, all dreamers visit Morpheus' realm be they gods, demons, muses, mythical creatures, or simply humans who teach Morpheus some surprising lessons.
