And given its dearth of mainstream cinematic adaptations over the years, the rise in popularity of the new horror gothic of the 90s (see Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein) and the technology available to finally realise its iconic antagonist, 1999 was the perfect time for the arbiter of all thing’s cinematic gothic, Tim Burton, to deliver us a new retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow… Both here are lightweight fluff, shot from the original press materials, only interested in selling the film and the experience of working on it. In this mature age of physical media, neither are worthy of your time. even flesh tones looking almost ghastly pale. There are moments of more flush and full color, but even in warmer locales the image takes on a processing, fewer encode artifacts, superior detailing, cleanup work, and firmer colors within Burton's trademark noir-inspired and chilly palette.

Sleepy Hollow is less of an adaptation of the source material and more of a Gothic murder-mystery that utilises the tale’s iconic elements. Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is now a big city constable with cutting-edge ideas about forensics his elders don’t understand, who’s sent away to the upstate hamlet of Sleepy Hollow (by a cameoing Christopher Lee) to investigate a series of brutal murders. Crane duly arrives and sets about trying to apply his rational mind to the investigation, aware the superstitious locals believe the culprit is a Headless Horseman (Christopher Walken) — the spirit of a fearsome Hessian mercenary, perhaps returned from beyond the grave to avenge the descendants of those who lopped his head off. Sleepy Hollow: Behind the Legend (legacy) – a look behind the scenes of the making of the film (30 mins) The origin of all things Sleepy Hollow is of course Washington Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which was first published in 1819. Tim Burton adapted the tale for the big screen in 1999, that film starring Johnny Depp as main character Ichabod Crane. The origin of this film is obviously Washington Irving’s 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but this particular adaptation started life as an idea make-up maestro Kevin Yagher had after he started directing episodes of Tales from the Crypt (1989-1996). Yagher developed his concept further with then-unknown screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, a few years before his own breakthrough with the spec script for Se7en (1995), turning the character of Ichabod Crane from a school teacher to an avant-garde detective.anniversary German blu-ray that was subsequently released in the UK by Paramount in early 2022. Francis Ford Coppola was a hands-off producer on the film (a fact Burton didn’t even realise until he saw his name on the trailer’s credits), so in some ways Sleepy Hollow can be seen as the unofficial end of a trilogy of classic horror updates Coppola was involved with — following his own Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), and producing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994). The key difference is that Sleepy Hollow has no interest in being as faithful to the source material as possible, as the key creatives just embraced the spooky concept of a headless horseman galloping around scaring villagers.

A new restoration from the original 35mm camera negative has been delivered by Paramount, although information on what exactly was undertaken is thin on the ground. What we do know is that underlying restoration has produced a mostly gorgeous native 3,840 x 2,160 image in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio (NOT the 1.78:1 aspect ratio of the 1080p releases) that also utilises 10-bit video depth, WCG and both main HDR grades (HDR10 and Dolby Vision), and has been encoded using the HEVC/H.265 video codec. Following the release of the film, a new adaptation of the classic tale was released. However, this interpretation was created for TV and ran from 2013 to 2017 on Fox, reaching a total of four seasons before its cancellation. Don’t Lose Your Head

A pleasure to see and the HDR brings out the absolute most in shadow details. If anything, the exposure to 2160p will only amplify your respect for the film’s look, as it’s all so breathlessly detailed.
