LaRee attended Brigham Young University (BYU) for a time. Val also attended university. While at BYU, she began to explore the idea of home schooling while pursuing a degree in early childhood education. When she had children of her own, she first sent them to public school. Kindergarten was about 10 miles away, and it was hard for one of the first children to endure the bus ride. I had many friends including some in the church of the LDS so I have some appreciation of the nature of the environment social and geographical. It therefore makes me sad to hear of such discord. As to the career of midwifery, I don’t have personal experience. When we lived in the Boise, Idaho, area s ome of our neighbors were involved in midwifery that ended in tragic results. In 2010, midwifery in Idaho became legal, requiring proper licensure. My own two deliveries ended up being long and complicated. I believe we would have lost my second son had we not delivered at a hospital and needed their NICU. There are pros and cons to using a midwife. It’s not on my personal radar, so I don’t research it. As time passes, Rita grows prouder of her interest in literary subjects and the theater. She brags of going to see a Shakespeare play.

Using the word “crazy” is so hard to hear because it’s insulting to everyone with this illness even though it manifests in different ways. Many people with diagnosed schizophrenia that take medication early on and consistently never experience another psychotic episode again. Unfortunately, since Val was unmedicated, his actions to his family are abusive. Whether claims of him almost crushing her in the junk yard are true or not, his paranoia of the government and medical establishments created an unsafe environment for his family. Aunt Angie: Faye's other estranged sister. Angie was cast out of the Westover family after filing for unemployment when she was fired from the family business. Gene thought Angie was trying to put him on a government watchlist. She also encouraged older children to teach younger children (p. 93-94). With her busy career as a midwife and her own illnesses to tend, she was gone from the family often. This fact should be considered when Tara, the youngest of the children, insists she didn’t receive an adequate education growing up. Rita, often scatterbrained and prone to non-sequiturs, asks Frank if he is married. He says he was once but no longer, as he was a failed poet and his wife wanted to give him new fodder. This is perplexing to her. I am impressed with the resilience of her family members for that matter – people have different ways of coping with extreme situations like this – including acquiescence – but obviously not every mechanism is as healthy as another, some are simply survivalist, some destructive. Everyone is a victim here.MacGillis, Alec (March 1, 2018). "Review: 'Educated,' by Tara Westover". The New York Times. ISSN 0362-4331 . Retrieved July 25, 2020. In Act III, Rita rushes in, apologizing for being late because of a talkative customer. Frank says it is no matter, as he wants to talk about an essay asking about the staging of Peer Gynt in which her response was simply to “do it on the radio." She admits it is short, and says Denny does not like her to work on essaysat home. How much nicer it would be if the plants were being cultivated by the proprietors so there was a sustainable business which could be a credit to Idaho rather than controversial. I do feel strongly that Val Westover has temper, control issues and untreated mental health issues. He now owns the business his wife and daughter started. The first thing you see in his wife’s memoir is his prologue. The letter I received (image above) is signed by him, not even a mutual signature.

The books I have identified, with the help of members of the Institute of Ideas’ Education Forum, teachers and colleagues at several universities, constitute an attempt at an education “canon”.Later, Westover reconnects with Charles, but is unable to act romantically towards him because of her conservative upbringing. Remembering Gene's and Shawn's abuse towards her, results in Westover terminating her relationship with Charles. Is it all true? That’s what I really wanted to know when I agreed to read LaRee’s memoir. Like many of you, I read Tara’s memoir, Educated,a couple of years ago and re-read it right after reading LaRee’s book–in preparation for this review. Other parts of the book were also interesting because they are very different from the way I have chosen to live my life. The stories after stories of how herbal, homeopathic and essential oil remedies healed their family of tremendous injuries was astounding. In Tara’s memoir it appeared to be an VERY arduous and much more painful battle in the absence of chemicals. But in her mother’s memoir although it was still a VERY arduous battle it seemed totally worth it because there was more healing possible than if they had gone to the hospital, especially with the burn injuries.

Any careful reader of both books will see that mental illness appears to be a strong factor and should not be dismissed as a problem for the family. Butterfly Expressions It makes me suspicious of people who seek total isolation from the rest of the world, whether it’s praying to God, living on a mountain or off the land or home schooling your children – these actions are still carried out within a greater community or society which plays a role in shielding individuals through constantly reassessing what is acceptable and not acceptable behaviour. In the case of Tara, it is the educational establishment that stood up for her, not her Church community. In this new Audible Original series – Daisy’s first ever podcast - she’s invited six celebrity friends to try to covert her to books by telling her all about their favourite classic. She promises she’ll definitely read one of them by the end of the series. Maybe. One day Frank asks her to come to a dinner party Julia is giving; Rita agrees, but she does not show up. She later tells Frank Denny did not want to go and she felt nervous, underdressed, and that she had brought the wrong wine. Frank tries to tell her none of that matters and she only needed to be her charming self, but Rita becomes offended since it seems like he wanted her to be a “court jester." Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful review of both books. I especially appreciated your statement: “one can be a “less-active member” or “nonmember” and still be considered a good Christian and a good person.” I hope too that you may consider the possibility that one can be a non-Christian and still be a good person.

One part that was particularly interesting to me was her account of her teenage boyfriend’s control. The author's healing from this led her to have to build up her self confidence again & learn how to stand up for herself. I believe she also included this to prove that she herself has made her own decisions including for decision to marry Val, partner with him with a survivalist, homeschool, no medicine, nontraditional lifestyle. Stefanie Westover: Tyler's wife. She helps him transition into the larger world. She supports Tyler when he confronts his parents about Shawn's abuse of Westover. I want to tell the story of my life as I really lived it. I want my grandchildren to know who their grandmother is and was, and I want to be a force for good in their lives. Also, I feel a compelling desire to shine a light of accuracy on homeschooling, herbal medicine, and the living of a conservative and Christian way of life. Cummings, William. " 'Factfulness' and 'Educated' among the titles on Obama's summer reading list". USA Today . Retrieved July 25, 2020. One day Frank is incensed because the university suggested he take a sabbatical because of his drinking. Rita tries to be sympathetic, but Frank’s attitude and his negative comments on a paper of hers makeher angry. She says he told her to be objective and to do her research and that she has done that; she claims he does not want her to have thoughts apart from his. Their fight fizzles when he says he read Rubyfruit Jungle and liked it, which makes her laugh.
