We get introduced to Kelly, the police officer investigating Zoe's case, and she steals the story. In fact, I wish we had a few extra chapters with Kelly as the focus as she felt a much stronger character than Zoe; Kelly's chapters had a bit more substance and mystery. She was a tough character with a complicated past that seeped into her present. Very powerful story, chilling, and gripping, like her debut author a book so powerful it stays in your head, are you being watched?

Why did her father go on tv to request their safe return when he knew what had happened. Wouldn't not saying anything be safer for his daughter? For that matter, why call police? So Zoe sees herself in a newspaper ad. A rather suggestive one. Those around her, including the police, dismiss it as coincidence. But then other women appear and the coincidences pile up and we are off to the races… An intense psychological thriller that I inhaled with my heart in my mouth…Unsettling and claustrophobic read. Truly shuddersome.”—Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Girl Meanwhile, the MIT is making progress with their inquiries, and Kelly advises Zoe to be super careful....and to alter her travel habits. Interspersed with the actual events in the story are creepy observations from the 'perp', explaining the sinister behavior.

Beyond the Book

I liked the epilogue but again found it unbelievable, just too much evil to be present in one person’s life among the people that she loves and trusts. and a minor point, but zoe's boss getting angry about her terrified reaction when he reaches across her sleeping body to undo her seat belt when he is driving her home, knowing what she's been going through, is completely baffling. even if she wasn't already in a state of fear over the threats she'd been experiencing, it's completely bananas that a man she's not even particularly close to would think it was okay to do that. and to then get offended at her outrage and confusion. that's a pretty intimate gesture, and a hell of a thing to wake up to. a grown-ass woman can unhook her own seat belt, and it was an invasive and unnecessary gesture. was it meant to be a time-saver? bizarre. this is the kind of thing that bothers me as a reader - the only reason it's in there is to cast suspicion on him, and it's an inauthentic situation in any real-world scenario.

There were lots of times during this book I felt I was reading a book written by someone who hadn't written before, the writing was amateur and the dialogue unbelievable in places.Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review. All the characters in this story are so real, from someone who is the main character right down to someone you would feel in life is insignificant.

I'm giving this one 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because I loved the writing and I couldn't put it down. This is a psychological crime thriller, and for someone like me, who loves psychological thrillers but isn’t a huge fan of crime and police procedural, I think this had the perfect balance. The book is well-written and fast-paced, with plenty of twists and turns. The characters are realistic and complex, especially Zoe, who has to deal with her own trauma and guilt. The romance between Zoe and William is believable and adds some warmth to the dark story.

As for the ending? You wonder about the twists in these type of stories right? What I liked about it is not only 'who' -- but 'why'. So --even if you think you 'might' know the ending - and do not be so sure ( really: don't)...there's an element added which I found interesting 'with' the ending as much as whodunit. Wonderfully sinister. Had me looking over my shoulder every time I traveled on the tube.”—Fiona Barton, New York Times bestselling author of The Widow FBI Agent Zoe Spencer uses her ability to recreate faces of murder victims through sculpture. Who she finds in this instance is a teenage girl who disappeared years ago. Lisa is a brilliant young medical student who is the single mother of a baby girl, Sydney. She lives with her parents, Adam and Hannah, who are devoted to her and their granddaughter. The parents support Lisa financially and emotionally when she is put on trial for the murder of a nurse she was dating. Lisa is acquitted, but her parents discover that Lisa is seeking out men who are willing to have sex with her baby daughter. Lisa's parents come to the realization that their daughter is a psychopath (it turns out Lisa actually was quilty of the murder of the nurse, who was so horrified by what Lisa wants him to do with her daughter that he threatened to reveal her depravity to the hospital where she works). Adam and Hannah run off and hide with their granddaughter after Lisa threatens to falsely accuse her father of sexually abusing her if her parents try to obtain custody of Sydney. this is a fun thriller, but it requires the reader to accept its premise without questioning its logic, and to suspend disbelief like a mofo. if you can do that, you'll have a good time. if you cannot, this is not the book for you.

Why did Hadley hide that her sister was out on a date with Jason on the night that she was killed? She was hardly involved and she had no motive to not tell anyone. Zoe is just your everyday girl - not girl, actually. She's a woman who finds herself in the personal ads. The scary thing is - she didn't put it there. Zoe tries to put this behind her wants to believe it is an accident. After she discovers someone else who's photo was in the same paper as her has been murdered, she realizes she may be in danger as well. From New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton comes a gritty, suspenseful story in the Criminal Profiler series. You leave your house to go up work at exactly the same time each day, you sit on the same seat,in the same carriage,on the tube, walk the same path and arrive safely at your destination at the same time.
