Most digital IR scopes aspire to offer the best of both worlds – a daytime colour mode and monochrome by night. To change between daily and tactical modes, firstly ensure the torch is off and then loosen the tail cap. Press and hold the mode button while tightening the tail cap again and the torch will then blink once to show daily mode or blink twice to show tactical mode has been activated. Sightmark claims eight hours of use from the integrated li-ion battery but notes that recording and use of the wifi function will reduce run time.

It also features the upgraded 2nd generation Strobe Ready dual button interface, that has a strobe ready pedal design inset into the tail cap more to prevent accidental activation, while still enabling fast and easy access to the strobe, mode changing and other outputs even when wearing gloves, making it a perfect tactical torch with true single handed operation. The run-time for turbo mode is tested without the temperature regulation. Turbo is only accessible with an IMR 18650 or a protected cell with over 8 A discharge rate. PLEASE NOTE: Infrared (IR) light is invisible to the human/animal eye & will require an infrared camera or night vision equipment to be able to see.Of course, shooting in the dark requires night vision optics. Lamping still works, but in my opinion it doesn’t hold a candle (pun intended) to infrared (IR) and thermal technology.

A sturdy one-piece mount attaches to a Picatinny rail and the NV008P screws on. It’s not unusual to have to use some shims provided between the scope and mount to re-centre the reticle in the screen once zeroed. Alternatively, there are some excellent aftermarket adjustable mounts. The LEDs in the Nightfox Spectrum are immensely powerful OSRAM LEDs: 5W for the infrared LEDs, and 13W for the white LED. It’s small, but Pard claims a range of 200 metres.That said, I do mourn the loss of some features. For example, the LTV will not work with ATN’s Auxiliary Ballistic Laser (ABL) rangefinder. Holding down the power button reveals a colour daytime image through the LCOS 1280×720 HD screen that conveys a range of data. There are 10 brightness levels, and an ocular collar adjusts the screen image whilst a second on the objective lens focuses the target image. By the time you’ve added the IR torch and a mount capable of handling recoil more ferocious than anything an air rifle can produce, the Sightmark Wraith 4K Max weighs a little over 1.2kg. But measuring 304mm long, it carries an IP5 water resistance rating and is compact enough. Interchangeable torch head system that allows the head of the torch to be changed. Changing the head size alters the beam range. The Spectrum is easy to use in darkness. Nightfox's Rapid Focus technology and a Stepless Dimmer Switch give you precise control over the beam. There are plenty of products to choose from and fortunately varying budgets are increasingly catered for.With the white LEDs selected, the light is turned on and off with the circular tail cap button, which can also be half pressed to provide momentary illumination until it is released. Once turned on single press the mode button (strobe ready lever) to cycle ultra-low, low, mid, high, turbo and the setting will be remembered next time the torch is turned on. I found it great at airgun ranges but in need of an ancillary IR torch, which can be mounted on either of the two Picatinny accessory rails, for longer distances.
