About this deal

This organic mulch is a slow decomposer, so it’s great for any landscape. Also, in my opinion, it’s a bit more sophisticated-looking than straw. It absorbs moisture and holds it, keeping soil consistently damp. Overall, it’s an amazing choice for many people. Shredded Bark Mulch Shredded bark mulch is very fine, but can be laden with slivers. Source: pfilias Even though it isn’t processed and treated, this type of mulch is generally safe for the garden. Insects and bacteria are usually killed off from the chopping process and how dry the mulch gets. You may want to watch out for trees that were treated with pesticides. Downer J, Faber B, Menge J (2002) Factors affecting root rot control in mulched avocado orchards. Hortic.Techn. 12:601–605 Shredded bark mulch is a slow decomposer, making it a long-lasting solution for your landscape. However, it may absorb nitrogen from the soil as it decomposes. If you’re planning to use it around nitrogen-loving plants, you may want to supplement the shredded bark with a bit with fertilizer.

Some types of arborist chips are better than others. Walnut tree products are generally avoided because they contain allelopathic chemicals that are toxic to other plants. Similarly, tree of heaven and eucalyptus are often also avoided. Make sure you specifically request chips free of these tree species. Our best overall mulch is the Vigoro Premium Wood Mulch, because it is an affordable and easy way to improve the look of your landscape, and comes in three different colors. If you are looking to reduce the need for watering or weeding your vegetable garden, we recommend the CleanStraw Long Leaf Pine Straw, because it allows water to reach your plants while being made of organic compounds, and is budget-friendly. What to Look for in a Mulch Type

Raman et al. ( 2004) conducted a field experiment to observe the effects of various mulches on cotton growth-, yield-, and weed-related parameters. Different mulches used were as follows, i.e., sawdust, coir pith, water hyacinth, sugarcane trash mulch, and rice straw mulch. Very low density of weeds (20 m -2) was observed in sugarcane trash mulch followed by coir pith, water hyacinth, rice straw, and saw dust, and highest in control (225 m −2) treatment. More weed biomass was also reported in the control treatment (157 g m −2) followed by saw dust, rice straw, water hyacinth, and coir pith, and very less in sugarcane trash. In the same way, more weed control effectiveness was present in sugarcane trash (91%), coir pith (84%), water hyacinth (77%), rice straw (65%), and saw dust (52%) in comparison to control treatment. Lastly, you have to know that rubber mulch is flammable and a serious hazard if it catches on fire. If you live in a fire-prone region, rubber mulches are not a good choice. Bot. 45:1321–1328 Over time, some types of mulch, made from organic materials (produced by or part of a living thing), break down and increase your soil's structure and fertility. This is especially true with compost used as a mulch because its nutrients will promote soil organisms and fuel plant growth. Plus, a layer of mulch can help fight climate change because covered soil holds onto carbon instead of releasing this greenhouse gas into the air.

For a long-lasting mulch that will not fade or deteriorate, rubber mulch is the way to go. Available in three colors, NuScape mulch has the same look as other wood-based mulches but is heavier, more durable, and made of 100 percent recycled rubber. In fact, the brand claims that the color should last for 12 years. It also provides a bit of bounce, making it a great option for playgrounds or swing sets. Arkan. Agric. Exp. Stat. Res. Ser. 483:33–36 First, cocoa hull mulch is not pet-friendly. Like chocolate, it’s potentially toxic to dogs and cats and should be kept away from them.

Regardless of the medium, every type of mulch all has the same goal: keep the moisture in and the weeds out. Because it’s a physical barrier between the soil and sun, water evaporation is decreased and weeds have a tough time pushing through. There are also extra benefits of mulch, such as fertilizing, insulating the soil, or just looking pretty. Sampathkumar T, Krishnasamy S, Ramesh S, Prabukumar G, Gobi R (2006) Growth , nutrient uptake and seed cotton yield of summer cotton as influenced by drip, surface irrigation methods and mulching practices. Res. J. Agric. Biol. Sci. 2:420–422 Cocoa shell is ideal for flowerbeds. Wear gloves and water well after laying - this lets the shells bind together. Avoid if you’re a dog owner - its strong chocolately smell is irresistible to pooches, but will upset their stomachs. You won’t get an extra dose of fertilizer from inorganic mulches, but they’re still the right mulch for many situations. The best thing inorganic mulch has going for it is that it’s long-lasting. You’ll only be replacing or replenishing it yearly at most. If you’re really looking to go low-maintenance, this category is for you! Rubber Mulch Rubber mulch does not degrade, remaining in place. Source: Beaver w/a Toothbrush Smith LJ, Skroch WA (1995) Turf herbicide injury to landscape trees as influenced by mulch. J. Environ. Hortic. 13:60–63Rokich DP, Dixon KW, Sivasithamparam K, Meney KA (2002) Smoke, mulch, and seed broadcasting effects on woodland restoration in Western Australia. J. Rest. Eco. 10:185–194 Mulch depth and seedling age are necessary for the proper establishment and survival of transplanted seedlings. Deeper mulches can better control the weed population, but these are not as effective in areas which are grown with smaller seeds. When the mulch material is used after the broadcasting of seeds, a thin layer is most effective as compared to heavy mulch application before seeding of smaller seeds (Rokich et al. 2002). Organic or live mulches are most favorable than the gravel or stone mulches for proper seed germination (Montano et al. 1977) which can inhibit the germination of seeds in deeper layers of soil (Winkel et al. 1995). After the emergence of seedlings from the soil surface, mulches can enhance their performance in field (Naklang et al. 1999) and nursery conditions (Mishra et al. 1996; Tisserat and Kuntz 1984). Mulch materials reduce the evaporation losses, in this way enhancing the water retention in soil and helpful in reduction of weed species. This is also achieved by mulches via increasing the root establishment, growth, and development (Fausett and Rom 2001; Wood 1994). Mulches permit the desired crop plant to extend its root system far away from the main trunk as compared to the un-mulched barren soil. In this way, mulched plants get more biomass and more heighted (Burgess et al. 1997; Watson 1988).
