About this deal

This was an excellent read. It was just a little less exciting than the first book, but still one of the best thrillers I have enjoyed reading in a long time. That’s saying a lot because I have read several well written suspense novels over the last several years. This easily belongs at the top of that list. This is the kind of book where you stay up late and skip whatever you had planned to just escape with an excellent book. I can’t remember having this tingling feeling since reading “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and becoming acquainted with Lisbeth Salander, one of the most unique literary characters ever created. And yes, this was that kind of book! But the couple decided to be together, which jeopardized the interests of both countries. For a long time in turmoil, Dominica decides to take revenge on her former bosses. She goes to serve in the CIA and tries to find out who is the main traitor.

So, before we go on, here's your spoiler/description of violent scenes ahead warning. Don't read below the picture if you're squeamish (or drinking). Lawrence does a pretty convincing job pulling off a Russian dialect, but it's being sociopathic while undercover where she shines. It's a tale of espionage. She starts off scared and green, but over the course of 2 hours she is brutally beautiful in her façade. Edgerton is handsome and sweet. He is excellent as a supporting actor and he only makes Jennifer that much more focal in the story. One of the other standouts here is Rampling, the stoic mission driven school commandant who effortlessly instills guile in her students through psychosexual manipulation. She is equal parts mechanical and overtly invasive in finding sexual quirks. There's another standout performance in Red Sparrow, but I promised I wouldn't spoil the movie in my review.

Well, in book 1, there was a lot of politics that was kind of beyond me, or at least that I kind of zoned out of, but it wasn't so much that I couldn't follow the story and I still enjoyed it. This one was even worse. I was drowning in politics and I lost interest in what was going on. That was the beginning of the issues I had.

This book follows the first in the series, Red Sparrow, which was a superbly realistic, fast paced thriller of U.S./Russia espionage, outstanding for a debut. Unfortunately here, overshadowing a somewhat intriguing and suspenseful plot is the author's adoption of highly annoying and lazy literary crutches, apparently for the sake of expedience. a b Dargis, Manohla (March 1, 2018). The other key character is played by Matthias Schoenaerts who is her uncle, . Vanya Egorov. It is a classic case of trying to figure out who is really on which side, as often a character has to use misdirection to accomplish a task.

Script is smart and thought-provoking, again being challenging and elaborate enough without being too over-complicated. Francis Lawrence directs with cool confidence and personally that the violence and torture weren't that gratuitous, they are not for the faint-hearted certainly but for the subject the brutality was needed, is not overdosed upon and added to the full horrors of the situation.

"Jennifer Lawrence's new movie had to be re-edited to avoid an 18 certificate for 'strong sadistic violence' ". Digital Spy. Hearst Magazines UK. Archived from the original on March 10, 2018 . Retrieved March 9, 2018. Lawrence plays a Soviet op who is conned into a femme fatale lifestyle of cutthroat operatives when her ballerina career is ruined from an injury. She crosses paths with Edgerton, an agent in the middle of a career SNAFU, as he attempts to redeem his status with the CIA after getting made during his cover. Romance and espionage ensues. The movie is one part Lawrence learning to survive covertly and two parts not trying to turn on her government to aid her mother, friend, and colleagues. For those who enjoyed Jason Matthew’s first espionage thriller, RED SPARROW, his second venture in this genre is as exceptional as the first. Matthews, a veteran of thirty three years in the CIA as a Chief of Station, a clandestine operative collecting national intelligence, a recruiter in many dangerous regions of the world, and many other roles has overcome the problem of following a successful first novel, with a second, PALACE OF TREASON, that in many ways is more interesting and presented in greater depth than the first. Many of the characters of RED SPARROW reappear; Simon Benford, a CIA veteran who controls all counter intelligence operations; Nathaniel Nash, the CIA covert operative and his Chief of Station Tom Forsythe, and his deputy Marty Gable; Dominika Egorova, a Russian trained “sparrow,” one who excels in the martial and sexual arts, and is a synesthete, a talent that allows a person to see auras around a person’s head that “allow them to read their passion, treachery, fear or deception;” Alexei Zyuganov, the Chief of Russian Counter Intelligence, Department of Service Line KR, a psychotic sadist who is jealous of Egorova; and Vladimir Putin, who plays a much larger role in PALACE OF TREASON.

A highly place CIA agent gets passed over for a promotion. So, in retaliation, he begins to sell secrets to Russia. He learns Dominika is on the CIA payroll and threatens to expose her. Where this film shines is through its direction and cinematography. Although subtle, I feel as though cinematographer Jo Willems has crafted a unique looking thriller that takes you from point A to point B with visual ease. Director Francis Lawrence has worked with Jennifer Lawrence many times on the sets of multiple films in 'The Hunger Games' franchise, which is why I believe him to be a great director. His work has always impressed me in terms of getting great performances out of actors/actresses and Red Sparrow is just another example of that exact talent. What will audiences make of Red Sparrow? It’s a tough sell: a bleak two-hour-plus Russian thriller with graphic rape and torture. It’s also surprisingly low on action, choosing talkiness over more audience-pleasing mayhem. It doesn’t entirely work, but there’s something about its full-throttle nastiness that lingers, and it’s refreshing to see something that exists in the studio system that possesses so many queasily perverse elements. It’s just not quite as seductive as it thinks it is.Well yes it is. It has all the bits that make a good movie good. Uppances are come. There are bits that had us whispering 'well I didn't see that coming' and there are lots places where we have been. I would maybe have liked Champs Bar on Dohány ut to have featured but it wasn't and that's OK. I have been counselled about using maguffies (tee-hee) as a rating tool so I won't.
