Today, these mottoes are mostly hushed-up in favour of county slogans – the more modern, publicity department-generated captions you see on ‘Welcome To…’ signs. The physical geography of Sussex relies heavily on its lying on the southern part of the Wealden anticline, the major features of which are the high lands that cross the county in a west to east direction: the Weald itself and the South Downs. Natural England has identified the following seven national character areas in Sussex: Simpson, Jacqueline; Roud, Stephen (2003). A Dictionary of English Folklore. London: Oxford University Press. Dating from around the 12th century, the 'Lewes Group' of wall paintings can be found in several churches across the centre of Sussex, some of which are celebrated for their age, extent and quality. Of uncertain origin, the Long Man of Wilmington is Europe's largest representation of the human form.

Through this scheme, Tony was able to publish his first book in 1976, We Wunt be Druv, a mixture of songs and folklore of Sussex, much of it originating from recordings made during the 1950s and 60s. This venture was slightly different from the other books in this scheme in that the EFDSS profits would be shared equally with Tony. From 1963 through until 1978, Tony edited the magazine, English Dance and Song and a number of Sussex songs with biographical articles would appear in the magazine. By 927, Wessex had conquered various other Anglo Saxon kingdoms to form the kingdom of England. In 1974, the Lord-Lieutenant of Sussex was replaced with one each for East and West Sussex, which became two separate ceremonial counties. Amongst top-tier local authorities, East and West Sussex County Councils are both held by the Conservatives and Brighton and Hove City Council is led by Labour. Amongst district councils, as of June 2023, the Lib Dems had a majority in three local authorities (Chichester, Eastbourne and Horsham), the Labour Party had a majority in two local authorities ( Crawley and Worthing) and the Conservative Party had a majority in one local authority (Adur). Of the six local authorities in no overall control, one had a minority Labour administration ( Hastings), one was run by a Lib Dem-Labour-Green coalition (Arun), one was run by a Green-Labour coalition (Lewes), one as run by a Lib Dem-Independent coalition (Mid Sussex) one was run by an Independent-Lib Dem-Green coalition (Rother) and one had a Lib Dem-Green coalition (Wealden). Conservative Katy Bourne is the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, having first been elected in 2012. In the 2016 referendum on UK membership of the EU, the people of Sussex voted to leave the EU by the narrowest of margins, by 50.23% to 49.77% or 4,413 votes. Law

Synonymous with the historic bonfire traditions of Sussex, “We Wunt be Druv” is still a statement which is still fairly commonly used in modern day Sussex, but what exactly does this proud phrase mean in English, and what are its origins? The county is home to the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe, England's largest arts festival. Brighton Pride is one of the UK's largest and oldest gay pride parades and other pride events take place at most other major towns including Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings and Worthing. Chichester is home to the Chichester Festival Theatre and Pallant House Gallery. As the oldest independent brewery in Sussex, Harvey’s worked with WPA Pinfold to reposition the brewery “for future generations, ensuring a legacy for the family business whilefuture proofing the brand,” according to Myles Pinfold, WPA Pinfold’s strategic brand director. Pale blue and copper wordmark It’s certainly a river worth saving, for the Ouse carries thousands of years of history in its waters. In the Iron Age, ironstone was extracted from Wealden Clay found along the river and its upper tributaries. Later, the Romans built roads from London to support the growing industry, and the river remained vital for iron ore extraction until the industry peaked in the Tudor period.

Sussex has a centuries-old reputation for being separate and culturally distinct from the rest of England. The people of Sussex have a reputation for independence of thought and have an aversion to being pushed around, as expressed through the Sussex motto, We wunt be druv. Sussex is known for its strong tradition of bonfire celebrations and its proud musical heritage. Sussex in the first half of the 20th century was a major centre for modernism, and saw many radical artists and writers move to its seaside towns and countryside. We should fly our flags with pride. Today we celebrate Sussex, one of the Britain’s most ancient kingdoms. Our historic counties have deep roots in the United Kingdom’s cherished identity. I get a lot of energy from collaborating with others, and I’m enthusiastic to see where a suggestion might go… Most recently I collaborated, designed, made, and exhibited with Karl Sebastian a lamp made from glass, brass, and steel. This will be on show at London Design Week 2023. Tony had become interested in local history, especially if it had a folkloric slant. Listening to BBC programmes such as As I Roved Out presented by Peter Kennedy that broadcasted local songs and stories, Tony learnt that people a generation or two older offered the best opportunities. Planning rules have been changed to allow for councils to put up boundary signs marking traditional counties of the United Kingdom - including the likes of Cumberland, Huntingdonshire, Westmorland and Middlesex. The government has proposed changes to highways regulations to allow traditional county names to appear on boundary road signs. This is part of a series of steps to champion the United Kingdom’s national identities. Earlier this year, the department launched a new initiative to support the ‘tapestry’ of traditional English counties being displayed on street and road signs. The government also published a new online interactive map of England’s county boundaries.

We wunt be druv is the unofficial motto of Sussex. [10] It is also used by some of the Sussex Bonfire Societies. [11] [12] One lesser known legend claimed that King Harold did not die from an arrow in the eye at the Battle of Hastings, but escaped and became a hermit at Chester. Saint Richard of Chichester is the patron saint of Sussex. [13] [14] Since 2007, the translated feast day of St Richard, 16 June, has been celebrated as Sussex Day. [15] Each year the County Hall, in the Sussex capital of Chichester, flies the Sussex flag, which is made up of six martlets (a Saxon bird) on a sea of blue, each one representing the six rapes of the kingdom of Sussex which it was divided into, forming the basis of local government. A recent comment on the revived TV production of The Larkins, the series based on H.E. Bates’ The Darling Buds of May was that it did not feature any genuine Kentish accents. Lewes’ town centre has a handful of hotels and B&Bs, but expect to shell out to stay that close to the action on the big night. Rooms are booked up long in advance and are sometimes booked out a year ahead. Airbnb has a few options in town and in the surrounding countryside, but late planners and budget travellers will find it easier to stay in Brighton or the surrounding villages and then walk, cycle or get a taxi in. Sean Goddard presenting, while Steve Roud, Vice-chair of Sussex Tradition looks on. Photo – Derek Schofield A rape is a traditional territorial sub-division of Sussex, formerly used for various administrative purposes. Their origin is unknown, but they appear to predate the Norman Conquest Each rape was split into several hundreds and may be Romano-British or Anglo-Saxon in origin. I hate critisising other designers work as I haven’t read the brief they were given but just as a casual observer and someone who loves this brand I couldn’t agree more. This is like seeing an old friend after Botox, hair dye and teeth whitening. If the brief was to strip the brand of all character then good job. To make it look like a own label white wine or even a sort of ASDA version of a bitter then it works. None of the elements reflect what is glorious about Harvey’s. No depth, no warmth, no richness. The illustrations are boring and unimaginative becoming utterly invisible and forgettable in a crowded market. I mean is that really the best illustration for an Indian Pale Ale? A map? I can live with the Turquoise but it doesn’t remind me of the sea nor the white of the cliffs, and I live in Brighton.
