Interestingly, with both my Mongoose Envoy Project and Surly Big Fat Dummy Project, I found whatworked great for me on other BBSHD-equipped bikes was completely ineffective on a cargo bike. I frankly haven’t figured out why this is, but I think it may be because my older builds were just that: Older. Something maybe changed in the firmware. My PAS settings that conserved major amounts of power while pedaling wound up being totally inadequate. I needed to step up some settings, which I will describe below. While my settings then vs. now are quite different, I don’t see any real penalty in range. Lightweight and powerful! (Motor weighs 13 pounds and whole kit with all parts will add ~16 pounds to your bike. There is a follow-on to this article that tinkers with these settings a bit further. In August 2023 I published another update that passed along what I’m doing differently since these articles came out in 2021.

Build Quality

Looking at photos of the Schachner MM15 motor, it looks like a re-branded Tongsheng TSDZ2. I’ve studied the photos and it looks identical to a Tongsheng but with different branding. The Tongsheng motor uses a torque sensing pedal assist which measures pedalling force. The Bafang BBS01/02 uses a cadence sensor which measures pedal rotation. The Bafang is a fairly good motor and comparable to the Tongsheng for reliability. The Bafang generally provides stronger assist (when compared with the Tongsheng). Parts availability is good for both motors and both can be easily serviced or repaired by a competent DIY enthusiast. Known Issues This is plenty of power and all I ever wanted or needed in an electric bike….. 35-40mph is just awesome for me. With this amount of power, you can reach incredible speeds, climb any hill, and accelerate like no other ebike can. In this review, I will tell you all the things to like and not to like about Bafang’s flagship BBSHD mid-drive motor conversion kit. This motor uses the same principle as the other Bafang kits and drives the rear wheel directly through a single front chainring. Gear selection is always important to maintain maximum motor efficiency when hill climbing. Using a high gear on a very steep climb will place an unnecessary load on the controller and could potentially cause premature failure. Bafang BBSHD Reliability
