Fiskars is a great choice If you need a kindling hatchet for the homestead, cottage, or camping. But Fiskars offers many options, and it’s not always clear what the best choice is.

Its size and weight make it easy to handle, especially for splitting smaller logs that can be handled one-handed. The Fiskars Norden axes were one of the most impressive releases of 2019. But are these axes really that good? Bushcraft expert Siegurd van Leusen found out and wrote this expert review. For this review he used the Fiskars Norden N10 felling axe. First impressions It’s not the most comfortable to “half-hold” for extended use without gloves – the edge of the hollow handle will dig into your palm. But it’s fine, and comfortable when held normally. And in emergencies… who cares.Norden hatchets have a hybrid wood handle, and come with a very slim and light recycled leather sheath. The X7 is small, light, and a great all-around hatchet. It can be handled easily by new and experienced users alike and is surprisingly capable in this role. It can split 4.5-5 inch pieces pretty easily. So you don’t need to worry about which log you start making kindling from. The X7 head splits well zzzThe handle is too short to be effective prying wood apart if it doesn’t split fully on the first hit, or if the grain is twisted. Despite its smaller overall size, the axe still features a full-size axehead, offering effective cutting power.

While I think there is a clear winner for a dedicated kindling hatchet, there are some serious alternatives that can do quite a bit more and still be a decent kindling tool. This is a two-handed axe, and you can generate much power to start splitting larger logs, even up to 12 inches in diameter. We could only conclude that this axe is a perfect replacement for the Fiskars X7 and X10. The whole feels better in hand because of the slight curve. The axe is heavier, but in this case this isn't a disadvantage. You have a little more body as you use the axe. The design of the axehead allows for efficient penetration into wood, enhancing its cutting performance. While they are interesting, these axes have never really spoken to me as they have the same head design, material, and performance as the X-series axes, but can cost 3 times more. The splitting heads have a wedge-shaped head with a 30° grind similar to the chopping axes, but with extended convex cheeks that flare out to split wood apart. In my experience the 28″ and 23″ chopping axes can chop or split up to around a 12” log. So they can fell a tree or break down firewood and can be used as a general “work axe”. The new model is said to have been perfected for accurate balance and high swing speed thanks to the lightweight handle and 71 cm length. If I could take one axe on this list for a longer camping trip, it would probably be this one, and if I don’t have a long distance to hike, then I would also take this X-Series model.
