Description

The Fujifilm XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM W Macro is the latest addition to the X-mount macro lenses, released in January 2023. This lens follows the popular Fujifilm 80mm macro lens and the “fake macro” Fujifilm 60mm macro lens, which are both detailed below. The XF 30mm is the first macro lens from Fujifilm with such a short focal length (30mm). Despite its compact design, weighing only 195g and measuring 7cm in length, the lens has an ultra-short focusing distance of 10cm, which makes it less suitable for live insect photography. It has a 43mm filter size and does not extend, and comes with a simple plastic lens hood. XF80 - IF, AF, sealed, big, heavy and expensive. 1:1. Excellent optics. OIS. Working distances no better than the 60mm despite the extra FL. Although there’s nothing to stop it being used with smaller X-series cameras such as the Fujifilm X-E3 and Fujifilm X-T20, the fact it’s one of Fujifilm’s larger and heavier primes does see it handle best with a camera body that has a large size grip.

The focus is really fast and precise thanks to linear focus motors. These motors are also used in the 90mm f/2, 50-140mm f/2.8 and the likes, so if you have tried these lenses you know what to expect.

quote]I can remember a time when some USA photo magazines would include dismantling a camera as part of a test/review, thus commenting in detail on how it was made. This stopped a long time ago, whether or not because manufacturers didn't like such a degree of mistreatment of the products they loaned out or because of increasing complexity of the products I do not know. The point I'm making is that in the limited time products become available for review there has to be a limit as to how much can be included, and indeed how much people want to read about. This review tells us how well the lens performs on a variety of subjects, shows the data measured, comments on the handling and other general observations that hopefully give us the conclusion that it's excellent, albeit expensive. This 80mm works great for general photography, and the 90mm f/2 works even better if you don't need stabilization MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth. Full HD video can be recorded at 59.94 fps, 50 fps, 29.97 fps, 25 fps, 24 fps and 23.98 fps, and with Film Simulation effects

By f/16, both lenses produce visibly softer results due to diffraction but the 80mm does seem to retain a small lead over the 90mm. f/22 is so soft on the 80mm that I don’t really consider it useable. The new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR is a lightweight, mid-telephoto macro lens designed to deliver the very best results from Fujifilm’s unique X-Trans CMOS sensor. Capable of achieving high quality macro shots, the XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR features an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super ED lens and three ED lenses. As the first in the X Series interchangeable lens series to have a 1.0x magnification factor, the XF80mmF2.8 achieves high resolving power and beautiful bokeh, making it a perfect lens for capturing stunning macro images.

The XF80mm f/2.8 R WR LM OIS Macro is in my opinion the best lens Fujifilm has ever made for the X-series. It’s sharp, it has great bokeh, it has OIS, it has fast autofocus, it has focus limiter and it does 1:1 macro. This lens has it all, and as a result it is very very versatile! The only downside is the physical size, but that simply can not be avoided with all these functions included in a mid-range telephoto lens! Samples This 80/2.8 has a lot of breathing; the image becomes much larger as focused more closely even if nothing moves.

Fujinon lenses are known for their image quality, and the XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR lives up to those image quality expectations. Fujinon lenses are also known for their inconsistent aperture ring tightness. Some are too tight, some are just right and some are too loose. To me, the aperture ring on the XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR is way too loose. I think it’s the loosest of all the Fujinon lenses I’ve experienced. The lens handles pretty well on Fuji cameras with a grip, so X-T1/2 and X-H1 owners will have no issues at all. Those with the X-T20 or X-E cameras will want to use one of the accessory grips for longer use, as it’s a bit unwieldy without the grip. On my X-T20, I used the metal hand grip exclusively. XF30/2.8 - Fuji's newest model. IF, AF, small, light and sealed. The LM AF is very fast and silent. Focuses to 1:1, but features very, very short working distances - making it too easy to shadow the subject and insufficient to be good at living moving critters at 1:1. Impractical with extension tubes. Very flare resistant and very low CAs. Makes a nice standard lens with some closer focusing capability. I understand the point you're making, but value is something that includes price and is not price to the exclusion of all other factors. It is true that some will just buy on price alone, but there is an element of we get what we pay for, so cheap will always be cheap and may not do the job as well. The VFM assessments take into account price, quality, what the alternatives might be, basically what the lens will do for us and how alternatives could provide something similar. Or not as the case may be. This lens makes its case on quality grounds, but unfortunately most macro lenses are arguably rather good anyway, hence the VFM part of the equation pulling the overall score downwards slightly. However, it still remains HIghly Recommended as it is still within that band of assessment. Given time perhaps the price will fall, in which case the equation changes slightly again.I have some questions and comments: this lens on a 24MP Fuji X-T2 seems to outresolve or resolve very similarly to the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS mounted on 42MP Sony Alpha A7R II. Furthermore, it is much more planar than the above lens.

The 80mm continues to be sharper than the 90mm even at f/2.8 and f/4 but the differences are definitely more subtle at f/4.

Additional Images

The build quality of the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 lens is exceptional and it also comes with the added benefits of optical stabilization and weather protection. The lens is composed of 16 lenses arranged in 12 groups, which includes an aspherical lens, 3 ED glass lenses, and 1 Super ED glass lens. Additionally, the front lens is coated with fluorine. The minimum focusing distance for this lens is 25 cm. Its little brother, the 60mm, would be incredibly proud of the optical excellence that the 80mm delivers in both macro and portrait images – it’s seriously sharp.
