Description

Warning: Due to the disconnected narrative structure, it gets very hard to talk about the series past the first volume without spoiling major plot points. Spoilers for the first four volumes (through issue 16) may be unmarked. Proceed with caution. Gideon Falls is an American horror comic book series created by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino, published by Image Comics. The series ran for 27 issues from March 2018–December 2020. Sorrentino's art is essential here - shifting between an oppressively gritty style to explosions of mind-bending surrealism - the illustrations here really do set the tone and help indicate changes in pace in very clever ways. His relationship between Gideon and Stan is similar to relationships between Plankton and Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants.

That said, it can appear a little slow regarding character development, but this does appear to be an intentional choice as the plot tends to rely on character reveals to maximize the impact of its twists and turns.

There's a trope in horror that I'm all set on. By which I mean I've had enough and would like something else. Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: As children, Clara was a foul-mouthed tomboy who would beat up anyone who tried to hurt her shy younger brother Danny. His disappearance only caused her to become more stoic and bitter. Holub, Christian. "Jeff Lemire talks Gideon Falls, his Twin Peaks-influenced horror comic". Entertainment Weekly. Father Fred settles into life at Gideon Falls and holds his first mass. He meets most of his parishioners and the members of town, including the more unusual ones. Some pretty interesting artwork… Awesome book with lots to love! If you’re a fan of horror and/or you like a strange story you should definitely go for this! I highly recommend this one and can’t wait for the next volume!

It starts with this crazy dude who pokes around in garbage thinking he's finding clues to some secret of the universe stuff in the trash. His shrink thinks he's nuts. Alternate Universe: The two protagonists reside in these. The Pentoculus allows Bishop Burke to visit many other versions of Gideon Falls, including The Wild West, Steampunk, and Big Brother Is Watching versions.

The second thing that bothers me, I'm bored. When I know exactly what's happening and the characters don't, and when a significant portion of the plot regards the period between the characters noticing the fishy thing and then getting to the level of knowledge I am as a viewer, that's all boring time.

Announced in 2017, Gideon Falls was billed as Jeff Lemire’s unique take on the horror genre, focused on exploring the idea of a source of evil versus relying on gore. The series received early accolades, winning best new series at the 2019 Eisner awards, with Dave Stewart winning best coloring the following year. In addition, the series is set to be developed into a TV show (though the current status is ‘in development’). Lemire looks to do be doing something like what he did a few years ago in his Vertigo book Trillium with the parallel worlds/storylines – the priest is in one world/timeline, the mental patient is in another. I think that’s what the visual inversions mean – and that last panel. It’s just another unoriginal aspect bolted onto this patchwork of other pop culture elements. There's a desperation in the voice of the characters. Letterer Steve Wands captures this with some scratchy word balloons. They're not pure white. There are these little imperfections that provide a unique look and feel. The infected are a completely different story. They're confident and powerful yet slimy. The font has a smooth quality to it, like how a snake might sound if it could speak. Gideon Falls is a masterfully crafted ‘southern gothic’ horror story, punctuated by richly textured and surreal art. The panels meld together in mind-melting fashion without losing the flow of the narrative – the work is utterly stunning. Furthermore, the story is consistently unsettling and has a pervasive sense of dark mystery that draws the reader deep into its twisted confines. For unknown reasons, a rivalry has existed between Stan and Gideon for years. Business rivals to begin with, their rather competitive personalities fuel their feud further. Gideon wishes to eliminate Stan for numerous reasons, namely to take control of his business and a strange secret it possesses and to remove the "obstacle" to winning Mabel's affection, and he plots day and night to figure out a means of revenge, though he is sometimes satisfied with simply irritating Stan. Stan doubts Gideon's abilities and constantly teases him. It’s because of that sheer consistency that makes reviewing Gideon Falls difficult at times. For the sake of the review, I can’t come here every time and tell you the same things, but Lemire/Sorrentino have delivered on every single issue of this book. This is consistent greatness from two of the absolute best storytellers in this industry. It’s that simple.

The team of Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewart works wonderfully well together. While the story was constructed by Lemire, with this release including the mini concept comic with his art, his aesthetic would not have captured the nightmare fuel that Sorrentino is able to create. This is particularly true in the image of the grinning man, a corrupted evil entity that has a sort of ‘creepypasta vibe’ to the design. Interweaving all of this, Dave Stewart’s muted coloring works ideal for the horror capturing that sense of ‘suburban gothic’ aesthetic. Conversely, when dealing with the abstract, the coloring becomes expressive to aptly match the shifting tone. Ultimately, the work is masterfully crafted and representative of three creators at the top of their game. I feel like Lemire watched two of the crappiest, most overrated, yet absurdly popular, TV shows of recent years, Mr Robot and Stranger Things, and decided to do something derivative of them. The mental patient storyline seemed similar to the main character of Mr Robot’s while the small town sheriff/supernatural goings-on was very much in the Stranger Things vein. Even without those shows’ flavourings, neither storyline is interesting. I also didn’t care about any of the characters who weren’t at all likeable or compelling. I was totally blown away by the visuals of this first barn sequence with the father running after the woman who’d been shot. Some of the coolest & best art I’ve seen recently. But all that & more gets kind of washed away for me once we learn the smiling man is some demon doing his bidding for an elemental force yet unseen. Every time I turn around, it seems, there's a new Jeff Lemire series. Nothing wrong with that. He seems to be the hot writer of the moment, and, so far, he’s doing a good job of keeping the momentum going.

Cover A

Overall, Gideon Falls is the perfect testament to the combined talents of Lemire & Sorrentino's ongoing partnership. Be kind to yourself and bump this to the top of your to-read pile. In the newer version, we basically start right in the action. Within 10 minutes it's full on zombie chaos, and again, we know all we need to know.
