About this deal

When purchasing any corral it is very important to look what will be the best fit for you and your horse’s needs.

An excellent portable horse corral needs to ensure its safety, durability, and transport with ease. For this reason, horsemen often choose pressure-treated lumber (usually pinewood or fir); such lumber costs 1/3 to 1/5 of the above-mentioned varieties. With pressure-treated lumber (or “PTL”), the manufacturer impregnates the wood with chemicals that resist rot, fungi, and insects. Look for treated lumber posts that are certified for in-ground use. Paint won’t bond to the material, so PTL fences are invariably natural. However, this product does not include an energizer or extra support poles, so you need to add those additional costs to your budget as well. Drainage is one of the most important ground features to maintain a clean and healthy horse living space. This is a debate which could go on a long time, so I’m just going to summarize the various positions here and give some examples.

Once the grids are installed, you fill in the holes with a bit of extra on top of the surface of your choice. Surface options include coarse sand and crushed gravel or crusher dust. The 6’ long and 4’ tall panels are made of lightweight PVC and only weigh around 8 pounds each. One set makes a 12’X12’ or 15’ round pen. However, at my current property, after doing everything exactly right, with the commercial-grade barrier cloth and all the right layers, by the end of the winter there were still craters and low spots in the footing. It seems there is nothing harder for wear-and-tear on gravel than horses’ hooves! Of course, I also have 11 horses and they are young and feisty. So they tear around a lot, wrestle, lunge and pivot etc. If you had a docile herd of 2-3 horses you would likely be just fine. But as mine are so hard on footing, and there’s so many of them lunging around, I have to level and add more crusher every year or two. What About Geo-Textile Cloth? I will say, that year was the worst for rain we’ve had in a decade or so – tons of houses had their basements flooded for the first time ever. So the amount of rainfall was certainly unusual. Regardless, I don’t think it’s a good option and I would never use it again.Even in the Oil Patch, where pipe can be cheap and plentiful, transport and labor costs may be high, and you’ll have to hire a professional installer to cut and weld the pipes. Planning must be exact, as modifications will be difficult and expensive once the fence is completed. Upkeep tends to be minimal, though repainting may be required. Pipe steel makes an exceptionally strong and long-lasting fence. There is, however, no give to these fences, and a horse can suffer damage if it runs into the fence. Fortunately, high visibility keeps such incidents minimal. They not only prevent mud when installed correctly, but they add a layer of coarse sand or crushed gravel on top can make it comfortable for the horse. If you usually travel with your horses or want to protect them without tying them to your trailer, you will need a portable horse corral. It depends on the panels. For example, the horizontal rails should be closer to prevent these animals from putting their heads through the panels. Q5: How can I find the material of the corral suitable for my horses?

After six winters in the Pacific Northwest rainforest, with 3-11 horses, here’s what I’ve found works best: As a farrier, my favourite footing in this area is crusher dust. My clients have a rubber mat outside and they feed off of that. If the hay does get on it, it isn’t like sand for colic concerns that I’ve ever heard of. It keeps their feet in the best shape of all the footings I’ve dealt with. Be aware that there are different types of “crusher dust” and the type that sets up very firm is what I prefer. The other stuff is too loose and just moves out of the way like pea gravel. It would probably be fine in a drier climate but on the Wet Coast, it isn’t ideal. Hog Fuel – unrefined mix of coarse bark chips & fiberCarrying out your very own DIY project for your horse shelter doesn’t have to be a huge expense. With some research, planning, and hard-working—you can produce a result you’re proud of. You might have to put in some elbow grease to get the job done, but that’s part of the fun. Of course, everything has its pros and cons. The product cannot function well under extreme tension and must be used with a permanent fence. When laying pea gravel in your pen, make it several inches deep to prevent water buildup and comfort your horse. This can make the initial outlay expensive.

The rubber – or rubber matting – helps to provide a stabilized surface and is dust-free. It is cushioning, so better for a horse’s leg joints and tendons if they spend long periods standing on it [2].The main problems with a sand surface are hot temperatures and feeding your horse. Sand seems to attract and hold heat. What about safety? It features double spiked spots and vertical plastic breakaways placed every 2 feet for extra protection and stability. They can reduce the chance of a horse injuring itself when it tries to break through. On the same day, here’s what patches of the 1/4 inch crusher dust look like – you can see how the mud and soil underneath has been churned into the crusher dust. On a full rainy day, these patches fill with standing water – there is no drainage: However, you can choose the height depending on your horse. For example, if you have miniature horses, a corral with a lower height is okay. Q2: How can I maintain the corral?
