The Katana 50 MkII features USB and phones/recording outputs with mic’d cabinet emulation. Thisletsyou send mix-ready amp tones to a computer's DAW for direct recording,headphones for silent practice,or even a front-of-house PA system for live performance. The free BOSS Tone Studio software provides even greater tonal tweaking, giving you the ability to change the factory-loaded effects, rearrange the effect chain, create global EQ settings, adjust system settings and more. Using Livesets, you can save your favourite setups and instantly reconfigure your amp for a variety of playing contexts.

For optimal performance, stay up to date with the current Katana Mk II system software and BOSS Tone Studio Five independent effects sections (Booster, Mod, FX, Delay, and Reverb) with three selectable variations in each. The Katana also sounds excellent at bedroom levels due to the ability to switch the wattage, so it has the added bonus of being great for home use– though, as we found out when we did our review of the best soundproof curtains, you can still annoy the neighbors with this amp.The Katana Version 4 update brings original Katana-50 owners some new effect features derived from the next-generation Katana MkII series. It’s really really loud. Personally, I’ve been able to easily get over a loud drummer and bass player with a 4×15 cab at not even half the total volume. The next section has the presets, presence, master volume, cab resonance and power controls. The Katana 50 can save four presets plus a panel setting. All the other models include eight presets. The presets are divided over two banks. Furthering the live possibilities of the Katana EX is the new emulated line out, which is in addition to the phones/recording out. This makes the new Katana a very valuable stage companion, transforming it from a modest practice amp to a combo that is capable of taking up residence in the largest venues. The Boss Katana 50 MkII EX expands on the capabilities of the best-selling Katana 50 MkII guitar amp combo, providing more performance versatility in the same portable design. GA-FC and GA-FC EX support allows you to select Tone Setting memories, turn effects on/off, and even more with Boss' dedicated foot controllers. There's also a handy line output for sending mix-ready tone straight to a house PA, plus the ability to link a second Katana MkII amp with the Stereo Expand feature — for three-dimensional, immersive sonics!

The knobs include an ‘amp type’ knob to switch between the five amp models. After comes a ‘gain’ and ‘volume’ knob. The volume knob is an independent volume control, so you can match volumes between your presets. The cabinet is made of quality MDF wood. It’s very sturdy yet light. The main cab is covered in a plastic skin that’s reminiscent of Tolex, except it’s much harder and smoother.

Even at the lowest possible setting on the 0.5 watt setting sounds pretty darn good. This amp is easily enough for playing at bars and even small/medium sized halls.
