Here’s a great quote from Stephen’s introduction that really covers character design in a nutshell. The designer not only has to understand how to construct a character, but also must develop solutions along the way, by building something from nothing. Do not leave Cáceres without eating in one of the restaurants in the Plaza Mayor, where you can try some of the typical Extremaduran dishes such as Iberian pork, lamb, the typical “migas” and the traditional and tasty cheese “Torta del Casar.” Among the places you cannot miss are the Co-cathedral of Santa Maria, the Palacio de las Veletas, the Arco de la Estrella, and the Casa del Sol. today’s tightly-linked, globalised world derives its origins not so much from the Industrial Revolution as from this earlier period. The pivotal role of Spanish America and China in these previous 250 years of global integration has been obscured and superseded by the prevailing narrative of Anglo-American predominance in everything from the economy to technology to military power.”

This assertion is not fully explained, and is I think an overreach, a constant temptation when looking at history with one particular focus. I was familiar with the story of the Manila galleons and silver, so for me the most interesting part of the book was the descriptions of Mexico. I hadn’t realized how prosperous and cosmopolitan it had been. According to the authors, “for two centuries, Mexico was arguably the centre of the world, the place where Asia, Europe and the Americas all met, and where people intermingled and exchanged everything from genes to textiles.” A great character designer asks questions and knows how to transform information into a clear design. The information on housing, people, culture, employment and education that is displayed about Silver Way, Shobrooke, Crediton, EX17 1HP is based on the last census performed in the UK in 2021.Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate. The Manila galleon provided the missing link in the world’s global trade network: for the first time, all the maritime routes – Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean – were now operational in both directions, knitting Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa together. You’ll learn how to play with shapes, restyle gestures, build rhythm, and how to work from life to create caricature designs based off references.

I recommend you stay at least a couple of days, as it is a city you will fall in love with as soon as you set foot in it. Just knowing that it’s never-ending, that there is always something new to learn. It comes down to experiences. In a year from now, you might go somewhere or see a different culture and all of a sudden you’re learning from that, or maybe you see some artwork that you’ve never seen before. I think one of my biggest things that I’ve learnt that I really truly believe comes down to that quote that we have heard: ‘Life’s a journey, not a destination’. Stop thinking that getting to any one particular place or one particular job is going to be the pinnacle, and going to be the ‘Oh my God I’ve made it’ moment. You never make it really. You’re going to have successes, you’re going to have failures, you’re going to have all of that, and it’s all just part of the journey. I think one of the greatest things that I have really come to understand is the true meaning of that – that there is no destination to this, there is no final result, and when you’re open to that, and accept that every day is just another part of a lesson learned, it just makes life in general a lot more exciting, a lot more freeing, and you’re not chasing anything anymore. I think when you’re younger, you tend to just be chasing things, you think the grass is always greener – ‘Oh if I only got that job!’ – but no, that’s not it. So just keep learning, keep growing, keep moving forward, and that’s all I think one can ever do in this industry – stop expecting final results. There are none, it doesn’t exist, it’s not real. Even so, I leave you the 10 places you have to write down on your list that you can not miss when you come! 1. SevilleMérida is an emblematic city and the epicenter of the Silver Way, which was once the ancient Emerita Augusta. What is ultimately important to understand is that being a professional character designer requires good ideas, the ability to draw in many styles, and a solid sense of draftsmanship. It’s good to practice animal characters following Stephen’s advice considering the amount of Pixar and Disney movies that feature animals as leads. Stephen’s tips in this book are guaranteed to help you improve designing humans and nonhumans alike. If you are interested in the history of Roman times, do not miss the Archaeological Park of Campa de Torres, the Roman Villa of Veranes, or the thermal baths of Campo Valdes. Here’s a map with the stops we enjoyed the most on my trip! There are 100% worth a visit! 36 Stages: Silver Way + Camino Sanabrés
